WNMU & 18 graduate hours

Hi All,

I hope I've posted this to the correct forum. After viewing some of WNMU's courses, I'm starting to wonder about something. I am looking at obtaining 18 hours in both history and political science so that I may teach community college classes at the high school I currently work at. I've noticed that some courses at WNMU are listed under both HIST and POLS, for example, HIST 503 and POLS 503 are Frontier Law Enforcement. When enrolled in this course, how does it appear on a transcript? Does it appear as both HIST & POLS, or only one? And if it does appear as both, is it feasible to take 18 hours of these courses and have it count for both History and Political science making one therefore able to teach both?

I may be wrong but my understanding was that you had a choice of which of the two you wanted it to say on your transcript, not both.

 

This is from the FAQ:

Why does the same course sometimes have more than one prefix, e.g. Frontier Law Enforcement is both HIST 517 and CJUS 517? The University faculty has determined that such a course has content appropriate for more than one discipline. By cross-listing the course, students have more courses to choose from in their field(s) of study, and can select the field in which they want the credit to apply. The class can be taken only once.

 

You'll have to ask the department directly, but the way that I read it is that you voluntarily choose whether to count a HIST/POLS class as HIST or POLS. Personally, I would love the doing the sequence on the history of law enforcement issues: Border Issues, Crime & Punishment, Drug Wars, and Frontier Law Enforcement, with possibly a couple of independent studies thrown in on a couple of Old West gunslingers.

 

Since the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies at Western New Mexico University requires 36 hours, of course you can take 18 hours in History and 18 hours in Political Science. It's just a matter of deciding which cross-listed courses you want counted as History and which you want counted as Political Science.

 

If the schools I've attended are any guide, I'd say your interpretation is correct.

 

I figured these courses would only count for one or the other... I was just hoping that IF they counted for both, I could kill two birds with one stone. I'm still aiming for History and Political Science though, and at their prices, I have no complaints about taking 36 hours!

Matt: Did you see my post in the other WNMU thread? State-run schools in New Mexico offer in-state tuition to out-of-state students taking exclusively online classes if they are taking no more than 6 hours a term. Moreover, the minimum course load one must take in order to qualify for federal guaranteed student loans is 6 hours.

 

You bet I did At that cost, I wouldn't need a student loan. My school will also pay 70% of the cost of 3 courses a year if I agree to stay with them for an additional year. I'm going to take one course through APU to get started, and then jump over to WNMU. I'm just waiting for them to post the Spring offerings. They have a link, but last I checked it didn't go anywhere.

Have you, perchance, found out whether WNMU requires threaded message board discussions for their graduate history and political science courses?

No I haven't. I haven't really communicated with anyone who has taken these courses to ask specifics. I've just read a bunch of "I really enjoyed the classes" comments.

As I've noted before on these boards, I'm manic-depressive and have been for two decades now. I've told my counselor that my long-term goals are to go back to graduate school, get a decent paying job (so I can get the hell off disability), and find a young lady friend. The third of these goals has happened rather unexpectedly earlier this summer, and this has impelled me to become more serious about attaining goals one and two. My counselor has put me in contact with an employment counselor who has been guiding me through the process of re-applying to grad school. There seem to be a couple of glitches with the online application at WNMU but my employment counselor has contacted one of WNMU's IT jocks about these glitches so I can get my app finished in time for a January 2009 start date.

 

Awesome! Which concentrations do you think you'd go for?
