If anyone wanted to write a Hollywood script about this sort of thing then the person who would quietly arrive at Foxboro Stadium would be Doug Flutie.

Drew Bledsoe replacing an injured Tom Brady would have a certain amount of irony to it.

It worked for a playoff game against Pittsburgh. :)

Testaverde and especially Bledsoe know Belichick's system, which is a huge advantage right from the start. Bledsoe is still thought of highly in New England, as fans recognize he was the major reason the franchise was eventually turned around. Parcells' arrival and Bledsoe drafted #1 really revived interest in a team that had fallen off the local sports radar screen.

This is lots of fun. On the one hand you've got all the drama related to Brett Favre retiring-unretiring-joining-the-Jets and it's coming together with all the drama of Brady-injured-oh-no-the-world-is-ending. In Boston the quiet word is that there are some members of the Patriots who are eager to prove that they are a great team even without Brady. I think they're right. It's probably the biggest game in the career of Matt Cassel. He has big shoes to fill. I think it's also a huge game for Favre. He has a lot to prove. It's great theatre.

My prediction: The Pats by a field goal.

You make some great points; Rodney Harrison probably already has the locker room whipped into a frenzy with the "no one gives us a chance" mantra. :D

I learned to never doubt Belichick, but the lack of a veteran QB as backup for Cassel does concern me. Matt Gutierrez does not exactly inspire confidence.

Patriots v. Jets is the 4:15 game tomorrow so you know that I'll be eating my dinner in front of the TV. Our friends in Las Vegas are predicting a close game (so am I). It's the best kind.

So the Pats win and I feel good about that. It seems clear that they're going to be relying more on the running game this year (I have a keen eye for the obvious) and I liked what I saw from Morris and Jordan. My big question is "Where was Maroney?" It seems like I'm always waiting for him to have a big game and it never happens. If the Pats are going to be relying more on the run game this year and if Maroney can't figure out how to be a big part of that game then I see him wearing another uniform next year.

So I'm complaining after a win. That's just me.

You're a New England sports fan, of course you are. :D

Didn't Lamont Jordan remind you a little of vintage Corey Dillon?

The "effin" Saints are doing what they do every effin year. Stinking it up.... I hate the NFL.

This week New England is favored by over 12 points. I don't care about the spread. I just want another win. I think I'm going to get it.

I think 12 points is a bit optimistic, but I do think the Patriots will win the game.

OMG! The Pats got STOMPED. You can't blame this on the lack of Tom Brady. The Patriots defense just didn't show up. I hope this isn't a preview of coming attractions.

After that embarrassing loss the Patriots had their bye week. They've been stewing for two weeks on that loss. Now they're up to play the 49ers. It's an interesting match-up. I'm going to be looking at Banta-Cain. He used to play for the Pats and now he's with the 49ers. I'm guessing that he would love to have a big game. The Pats are favored by 3 points. I'm going to say they'll win by 7.

OK, so I'm smiling because the Patriots won by nine points. They'll be staying out on the left coast this week because they're playing San Diego next Sunday. It's one thing to beat the 49ers and another thing altogether to beat the Chargers. C-ya next week.

I'm not smiling. Both the Pats and the Niners looked kind of lame, but the Pats proved to be a little less lame. Both teams are playing new unproven quarterbacks, but the Pats have the nucleus of their Superbowl teams around their QB. The Niners are gradually improving and looked ok early, but they were clearly outclassed late.

They are staying at San Jose State. Maybe SJSU's WAC football team will teach them something. (Don't laugh, both Bill Walsh and Dick Vermeil were SJSU graduates.)

    That's cold Kizmet, that's cold.

The Chargers aren't playing like last year either. The Fish slapped them around today, I hear. The whole NFL is stumblin' and bumblin' these days.

Mostly I try to be friendly. Mostly I try to be optimistic. But underneath all that I mostly feel like it's a cold, cold world.

The Chargers are favored by about 5 points. I think that this is the first time in quite a while that the Pats have been considered to be the underdogs.
That's so amusing. My prediction: The Patriots by 3 points.
