Was that written from the author's luxury box at Qualcomm Stadium?

I don't expect the Patriots to go 16-0 again, but if that author thinks the best they can do is 11-5 and the best the Colts can muster is 10-6, I'd like some of what he's been drinking.

Saints???? In the Super Bowl???? The New Orleans Saints???? My New Orleans Saints???? We're talking about the guys who wear black and gold a lot right? I mean we're talking about the Louisiana, New Orleans the city, the Saints the NFL professional football team? The same guys who have an uncanny ability to skillfully snatch defeat out of the jaws of impending victory? In the Super Bowl.... I feel dizzy.

Bruce, this guy may be on a whole new kind of crack.

I'm a bag-head from WAY back, in fact a Saints fan from birth but even I don't share delusions of an actual championship game. Excuse me while I shed a tear.

I'm thinking something like LSD if he thinks the Saints are going to the Super Bowl and the Chargers are going 13-3.

I guess we get to start off the season witha little contest between the Redskins and the Giants. It might be fun to check out Eli. He's a big deal now, right?

    Right?

The only reason it isn't "Eli &*^$%# Manning" in Boston is because it's "David &*^%$# Tyree". :(

I'm ready for the NFL game. Sundays were study days last year so I missed most of the games. Before that, I was in Europe and didn't get to see many games due to the time difference.

This year, it is game on.

I agree; this summer was a bust (too much rain) so I'm ready for the season to start. I was at the Patriots/Eagles pre-season game, and it just wasn't the same; people wearing shorts and t-shirts doesn't get me in the mood. :D

    The Oakland Raiders!!

No... no, I don't think that they will be in the Superbowl, or even in the playoffs.

It's just that the phrase "a whole new kind of crack" made me think of them. (It's an Oakland thing.)

I love the way that coach Lane Kiffen challenged owner Al Davis on some personnel decisions this summer, and Davis responded by handing Kiffen a resignation to sign. The thing is, Kiffen's contract is structured in such a way that if Davis fires him, Davis has to pay Kiffen the rest of his contract (several million dollars). But if Kiffen resigns, he forfeits the money. So Davis says "I want you out! Resign!" Kiffen says "If you want me out, you'll have to fire me!" So the net result is that Kiffen is back coaching for another year.

Meanwhile Davis retains all personnel decisions in his own hands, as usual, including choosing all of Kiffen's assistants. Normally that's not the way to maintain discipline on a football team, when you have no power to hire and fire and when everyone knows that they can go over your head. Sadly, that's the normal situation on the Raiders and it's why coaches either implode in impotence as players simply ignore them, or else leave at the first opportunity if they've had some success (like John Gruden).

Strangely, in this case I get the impression that Kiffen has impressed his players by his courage in going toe-to-toe with Davis. Most coaches are too intimidated to do that. (Kiffen wants to be fired, so what's he got to lose?) The players may actually play for Kiffen this year and not just jog around the field, dogging it like Randy Moss did, not even making plays for balls thrown his way.

So the Raiders might be a little better than people expect that broken franchise to be. (That's not difficult when you are expected to be the worst team in the league.) They won't make the playoffs, but they might actually win a few games. They do have a few talented players.

The great thing about the Raiders is that they make losing and disfunctionality so entertaining. They do it with real style.

Al Davis was a great owner/coach in his day, but to say he's lost his fastball would be a major understatement. I never liked the Raiders, but what he's doing to the team is rather embarrassing.

I agree. He's made a rather long series of bad decisions.

My prediction: He'll die before he steps down.

I thought the same of George Steinbrenner, and while he hasn't officially stepped down he has turned over almost all operations to son Hank (thus ensuring my son will also have a Steinbrenner to hate as I did).

Every New England fan is holding their breath right now; Tom Brady got knocked out of the Chiefs game in the 1st quarter with a left knee injury and is listed as out for the game.

Both teams had to go to their back-up quarterbacks and the Patriots barely beat the Chiefs. Matt Cassel played better than I though he would but he'll have to do much better than today if the Pats need him to play next week.

Agreed; the latest word is that Chris Simms will be in Foxborough tomorrow for a physical, but if I were Bill Belichick I'd be looking for the phone numbers of Vinny Testaverde, Daunte Culpepper, and Drew Bledsoe.

Wow, Daunte I could see, but those other guys wouldn't help more than any scrub that could be found on the waiver wire.
