Many thanks to kizmet and ebbwvale for their contributions.

It seems the Open University of Malaysia is the only school offering online /distance learning post graduate degree programs in Malaysia...

If otherwise please make your suggestions..

    Thanks

    Sam

Hi - Thanks for the link. This version worked better for me.

If I could ask, I'm curious to know what it is about this particular school that would make it a preferred choice. I haven't even started to look through the website so, I'm really just asking for your thoughts. Thanks.

As an Australian, it is more in the neighbourhood. Travel, if required, would not be costly. The next is the quality. Malaysia has good standards generally, or at least similar standards to Australia. Both are Commonwealth Countries and have the UK traditions. There is a slight difference in currencies that makes it more attractive. I would also be able to claim a tax deduction for the costs

Australia has some very good higher education loans and institutions, but at the end of the day you still have to repay, and the repayments cannot be claimed as a tax deduction.

I would like to do a PHD with an American University, but the residential requirements (RA) would mean a substantial extra cost, a lot of travel, and there is a slightly adverse currency difference. My perspective is that there would be little difference for me between the OUM Doctorate and the US Doctorate, particularly in the online scenario. In the US, I am sure that this would be different.

I would do a DETC Doctorate. I am not worried about the RA and NA debate, as long as the degree is recognised by the USDOE. I have three other degrees which fit the RA paradigm. I understand that American Public University System is developing Doctorate Studies, but I suspect that they will go for the regionally accredited route which means residential schools. I am also advised that the APUS doctorate would mean a wait for a few years.

I still haven't finally decided, but it is looking good for OUM.

When you're talking about saving money then your talking my language. Best of luck in your search for a "good fit" program.

    Hi,

Not all RA schools require residencies for their PhD programs. For example, NCU and TUI both offer 100% online PhD programs.

    Good luck!

Thanks. No matter how often I read this quote, I still find it inspiring.

Their Doctor of Philosophy (Engineering) looks a great program at around $8,000 total, but the 48 meetings would cost a small fortune (US to Maylaysia) unless meetings can be done via video.

I have received advice that I could communicate via audio/visual. Persumably the webcam etc would be enough.

I think I will be applying. It is the right price and reputable and also, for me, in the neighbourhood.

I have found another Open University operating in Malaysia. It apparently offers only undergraduate degrees and may be of interest to those are seeking degrees at that level. The university looks like a quality institution and the degree may well be recognised under GAAP. It appears to be modelled on the Open University of the United Kingdom as well.

The upside of the institution is that nobody could reasonably make the accusation that it is an unaccredited or a a diploma mill. The degree is also very affordable. The US dollar would do very well against the Malayasian Ringgit.

The downside for US Citizens, perhaps, may be the recognizable factor for HR Managers, but if the question is an unaffordable debt or no degree, then this may be a good option. Certainly the degree box in the application form for the job could be checked.

I finally got around to peeking at the 09-21-08 NY Times last night. This week they included their yearly education magazine supplement. There was an article in it regarding higher education in Malaysia. It was quite extensive and included descriptions of quite a number of Malaysian universities. If you don't normally read the NY Times you could probably find it in your local library. Of course it's also online but they don't always put every article in the online version (I haven't checked yet to see if the above article is online).

    I'm also considering Malaysia PhD

    Hi,

I'm also considering doing a PhD in business in Malaysia. I've done some research - they look like a reputable place to do it online without any RA requirement for a cheap cost.

I wasn't able to find anything in the USA that was cheap and no RA.

Anyone found anything else around the world (ie. Europe, Africa, etc)?

    NY Times

Permit me to point out that thi is a "Special Advertising Section", which means the copy is written by the advertiser and is not subject to NY Times standards of accuracy and truth in journalism.

    It's a big difference.
