Citing the concentration in the diploma

Answer: They join a bunch of distance learning discussion boards and style themselves as "the Educated Derelict" for as long as it takes them to (possibly eventually) earn that damn master's degree in history.

 

I have to disagree with this. A concentration doesn't necessarily allow one to teach in that area: 18 credit hours in the subject that one wants to teach is the standard and that is not seen on the diploma. In addition, one could have a Masters with 18 hours in English and add 18 hours in History and be qualified to teach both. There have been many threads on this board on this issue.

I have found that most universities as for official transcripts. None have ever asked to see the diploma. YMMV.

Non-academic employers rarely ask for transcript or diploma, in my experience.

Empirically assessing the value of USNY/Regents/Excelsior degrees over many years, for the purposes of admission to graduate programs at home and abroad, every foreign institution operating on the British model or a model derivative of it, has asked for a certified or notarized copy of the diploma. These institutions where of course either in the UK or in "the colonies".

With respect to concentrations, I was always particular never to call mine (in Poly Sci) a major since the requirements for a major normally are more stringent and greater in terms of elements. However, since Excelsior, in a bold marketing effort, relabeled their liberal arts concentrations, "majors" without ANY alterations to their structure whatsoever, I have followed suit and now refer to said award in Poly Sci as a major.

(The USNY diploma I have does not refer to any major, then again, it makes no reference to Regents [Excelsior] College either.)

I do not doubt Ian Anderson's testimony, however. A man possessed of such perspicacity and obvious integrity is never going to have his veracity questioned , save by knaves and scalawags.

My BS from Excelsior lists "Liberal Arts" in my transcript without any mention of "Liberal Studies," which in all other paperwork and communication was considered my major there. Is the Liberal Studies program actually an absence of a major?

No matter either way, but I am curious. On my resume I list exactly what they put on my transcript: Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts with focuses in Health Professions and Psychology.

The diploma itself simply reads "Bachelor of Science."

 

This shouldn't surprise anyone. Our words are read by lots of folks who never comment.

Honestly don't care one way or another. One knows what kind of degrees they've acquired and HR checks school records.

 

I voted "no" but I should qualify that.

My BS degree diploma simply states Bachelor of Science, it doesn't include the major, the emphasis, minor or capstone concentration however a transcript will include all of these.

Again I don't know what Ashford's plan is with my MBA diploma but I'd be happy with Master of Business Administration without even a mention of Organizational Leadership. The emphasis is on the transcript if I so desire to apply that wherever and whenever it suits me, but I don't think it necessarily belongs on the diploma itself. The diploma is for the degree actually conferred.

As such a Master of Science in Criminal Justice should still be a "Master of Science" on the diploma. Maybe I'm just old school?

 

I can agree if you will only have one degree in a general subject. But picture a wall at your home and 4 MBAs in that wall that the only distinctive mention is only the name of the schools. Imagine yourself with 4 certificates that on the face will only indicates that was done in business administration and would not mention that is in an accounting concentration for example. I guess that beats the purpose of specializations. But that is just me.

In another note I am really enjoying your blog and waiting your word that your are finally done with your MBA.

Now with certificate programs I think it is essential to list the concentration because that is all a certificate is. Coursework in that concentration.

On a graduate degree I can kind of see listing the concentration in that the degree is so abbreviated coursework wise, with the exception of a doctorate, but is also laser focused.

A typical undergrad degree (BA or BS) however has usually 2 years of general education before getting to the major...in which case I see listing just a BS or BA as being fine without the major on the diploma.

As for framing, I've got a box somewhere with all my diplomas in it. I don't have a dedicated office and my wife doesn't think they fit the home decor so they sit.

No like this one, others you may get sponsorship by competition.
But if you do no mind MBA from a National Accredited University, you can get
masters for under 5k(assuming you have no units to transfer).
