I bought a 1 TB drive from Best Buy last week to use on my Mac, unfortunately it requires vista(bad) to work properly. tried to take it back, but their uncustomer unservice people said NO!. Apparently the shrink wrap sealed box had a different serial number then the unit.

If you buy from then (DON'T) have them open the box and check the serial number or cavaet emptor!

Better yet, buy from some one else!

I'm sorry to hear this. May I ask what brand of drive?

I've regarded Best Buy as a (small) cut above the others -- such as Circuit City or the (soon be be defunct CompUSA) -- in part because I believe their sales people are not on commission, and also they seem to know a little more about the products.

It might be worth trying the phone . . . although I just discovered that the wonderful "Get Human" site -- which tells how to reach a real human at more than 500 companies -- seems to be gone.*

If you paid by credit card, the card company could help, especially if it is one with added features.

    * Re Get Human: even if they're really gone, here are three of their very helpful general hints:

Interrupt. Press 0 (or 0# or #0 or 0* or *0) repeatedly, sometimes quickly. Unfortunately the same keystroke does not always work for each company. Many IVRs will connect to a human after a few “invalid entries”, although some IVRs will hangup.

Talk. Say “get human” (or “agent” or “representative”) or raise your voice, or just mumble. :) The IVR might connect you to a human after one of these key or unknown phrases.

Just hold, pretending you have only an old rotary phone….

I'm assuming this is a USB drive?

I've never heard of an external storage device that required a particular operating system to work. Many drives that say PC only come with automated backup software or something similar that will not work on Mac. The drive itself, however, if USB, should be able to be wiped and recognized by your Mac.

When you plug it into your Mac, open Disk Utility and see if it shows up. If it does, erase it and format it for Mac.

If you can't get it to show up, can you format it as FAT using a friend's PC? Once you do that, the Mac should "see" it and you can then reformat to OS X Journaled

Remember that recent incident in Best Buy when that woman (caught on video) was giving them grief and a police officer used a tazer on her? Well I understand she was never charged for simply being an unruly customer.
Maybe the geek squad could not handle the pressure and had to call in reinforcements.

Heck my dad was a cop and I have a lot of respect for law enforcement. But the situation toady is aggravated by EOE correctness in which someone 4'9" has to take on someone almost twice their size....soon an equalizer comes into play.

Best buy trys too hard to be the Walmart of electronics. Often Office Depot, Circuit City or even Dell beats their prices. Maybe its just me but when I walk into a Best Buy, it seems they have the atmosphere of a casino, that you will be eager to spend like hell.

    1. Delt with a manager and got treated like I was a criminal. Kept asking (at least three times) how many of these drives i had.

    2. Called to their help desk, and after repeated try's final did get some one who spoke english as their primary language, again got passed to a manager, result the same as 1 above.

    3. Drive was a Western Digital network capable (ethernet) or USB. My MAC laptop only has a USB 1.1 port so USB access was diificult. On the network half my programs could not see the drive.

    4. Finally talked with WD (all help truly understood english) and they were willing to trade the drive for one that would work. It is twice as large, but has the same capacity.:D

On the positive side, Best Buy is being sued:

Woman sues Best Buy for $54M in alleged lost-laptop coverup

Though I'm sure this lady won't even get $1 million unless there is a settlement, the negative publicity has already begun.

What the average person doesn't realize is how difficult it is to handcuff someone if they're actively resisting without inflicting injury to them. I'm 6'3" 260lbs and a 5-nothing female is going to be a handful by myself. I could just punch her in the face and end it, but we have to use the least amount of force necessary to effect the arrest.

Tazers look bad on video, but the alternatives are a straight-out fistfight or clubbing them with wood/metal batons if pepper spray doesn't work (which it sometimes doesn't).
