    Hi All:

A teacher at my school is interested in taking his M.Ed degree online. He is interested in curriculum and/or leadership. Can anyone recommend any quality RA programs for him to consider? Thanks!

I'll try to find my old threads on DL MEds. The threads themselves were organized by price category (under $10,000; $10,000-$15,000; $15,000-$20,000; over $20,000; and no pricing info available). They had info on school name, website, majors, and tuition. They dated from May 2005.

I chose Grand Canyon's MEd in Curriculum/Instruction with an emphasis in Technology. It uses the Angel LMS software - which is easily navigated.

Class format is essentially eight modules with an assignment and a threaded discussion. Class members are divided into community learning groups with intermittent projects assigned. I am on my fourth course (of ten) and like it so far.

I HIGHLY recommend Walden University. I'm in my last course with them, and I loved my program which is in designing curriculum, instruction and assessment. The degree is an MSEd, but that's really no different than an MAEd or MEd.

The programs at Walden are endorsed by Lee Canter, who is a HUGE name in education. The courses are 8 weeks long, which is great because it's not stretched out, but it's not crammed in either. The courses require a good amount of reading, plus each course comes with DVDs that include discussions and seminars presented by important people in education, such as Lee Canter and Dr. Robert Marzano.

Tuition is a bit more than an on campus program, but compared to some of the other distance learning schools I've seen, Walden is actually pretty cheap. One thing to note is that textbooks are included in the tuition, and they ship them to you brand new. I loved this.

Walden has a variety of concentrations for their education programs as well. I honestly can't speak for the other programs, but like I said, I loved mine. You mentioned your friend was looking at educational leadership. I do know that Walden's program in ed leadership is not designed to get you a license, so keep that in mind.

If there's one school I would NOT recommend, it's the University of Phoenix. The place is highly overpriced, the instructors I had were less than steller, and I hated being in learning teams because my teammates did squat. I would hate to put anyone else in that position. Go with Walden. That's my recommendation!

Most of Central Michigan University's www.cmich.edu distance learning programs involve learning that takes place at a distant campus. This includes most of their master's degrees in education, but they are in the process of organizing their first online cohort for their MA in Educational Leadership with concentration in Charter School Leadership, if that interests you.

PS - Thanks for the heads up!
