This is a topic that has been discussed intermittently on this board. The consensus is that there's no real difference. Since you feel differently, you will, of course, provide some evidence for your opinion.

Does being less rigorous qualify? Number of credit hours, large numbers of schools not requiring disertations, less field work, lower admission standards. It is pretty obvious why.

To which schools do you refer? The number of credit hours is usually the same, and all schools that offer the Ed.D. of which I am aware require dissertations. I am not sure about "field work," but Ed.D.s by nature are practicality-based. Plus, the admission standards are normally the same--at least in my vast experiences--of most any doctoral program, regardless of specific title or string of letters.

    Hi Ted,

This must be a new program. I was to find out info about their online Masters program but not about the PhD program. Do you have a link that you can share with us?

    Thanks,

    Hi Ted,

Thanks for the link. I see that it lists both the M.A & Ph.D. together. But when you click on the link all it seems to talk about is the M.A. and I didn't find anything on the Ph.D.

But if you click on "Programs" on the MA Curriculum & Instruction: Career & Technical Education page (url above), it takes you to www.coedu.usf.edu/main/programs.html, which gives you the option to click on Career & Workforce Education PhD, which takes you here www.coedu.usf.edu/main/departments/ache/VocationalEdPhD.htm, but then it says nothing about any online classes. Screwy.

    Hi Ted,

Yeah it is a little interesting. The description really doesn't talk about the program being delivered online. However on the link that you sent the page is filed under the "online delivery" section. I'm going to look into this further. I'm still search for a spot to request more info!

Benedictine University www.ben.edu www.onlinedegrees-benedictine.com offers an online EdD in Higher Education & Organizational Change. This three-year 60-hour program charges tuition of $21,000/year (payable $5,250/quarter) for the first three years time in program, for a total of potentially as little as $63,000, but with the caveat that there is still the issue of the $10,500/year continuation fee should one need additional time in program. They are accredited by the North Central Association.

The University of Florida www.ufl.edu offers the EdD Educational Leadership, the EdD Educational Technology, and the EdD Higher Education Administration online. Tuition calculations were a bit byzantine. But here www.coe.ufl.edu/online/edtech/FAQ.htm we have it that online tuition is $77/hour higher than bricks & mortar tuition. And here www.admissions.ufl.edu/annualcosts.html we have it that full-time graduate tuition is $7,850/year for in-staters and $23,730/year for out-of-staters (assuming 24 hours/year). Thus:

    $7,850/24 = $328.75/hour in-state (bricks & mortar)
    $23,730/24 = $988.75/hour out-of-state (bricks & mortar)
    $328.75 + $77 = $406.75/hour in-state (online)
    $988.75 + $77 = $1,065.75/hour out-of-state (online)

Therefore, the 72-hour EdD in Educational Technology costs $29,214 for in-staters and $76,734 for out-of-staters while the 90-hour EdD in Educational Leadership and EdD in Higher Education Administration cost $36,517.50 for in-staters and $95,917.50 for out-of-staters. They are accredited by the Southern Association and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

    Georgia Ed.D. and Ph.D. degrees?

I have been looking for a low residency/online degree offered in Georgia, mainly because the out of state tuition is always so much higher! Georgia offers degrees through Georgia On My Line (a consortium of GA Universities). They charge the same tuition - $350/hr - to in state and out of state students. However, they currently only offer MA and Ed.S. degrees. I would love to find a similarly priced program that is either at a GA school, or offering the same tuition to in state and out of state students! Preferably, I'd like to find something that would allow the option of stopping at the Ed.S, or continuing on to get the Ed.D. if desired.
