In addition to Ted's information here.......... a consortium of five universities; Universiity of Montana / Montana State Univeristy / Colorado State University / Portland State University & University of Northern Colorado, all are offering a Ed.D. in Curriculum & Instruction based degree with an emphansis on either Mathematic & Education and/or Science & Education. http://www.cltw.org/partners.htm

The program is about 50 semester hours above the master's level, the tuition is fixed for those admitted into the program...which you will considered a "fellow" (tuition paid for except for the 14 sem hrs for dissertation).
Science and Math content area courses (3 hours ea.) range anywhere from $300 - 900 per course (not per hour) and Educational courses (3 hours ea.)are fixed rate around $1089 per course. * Dissertation hours are subject to normal graduate tuition costs, especially depending if you are either in-state or out-of-state.

Cool! Is this a relatively new doctoral program? I know that Montana State has had their MS in Math Education and Science Education for awhile.

They require that you be available to attend one weekend per month on campus.

I'm sure that the majority of individuals on this board can determine for themselves whether a given distance learning (or short residency) doctorate in education (or other degree) is suitable to their needs. That's why the weblinks were provided. Thanks.

Sure, but it helps people a lot when common pitfalls are pointed out, and I know from looking for a doctoral program for myself that monthly residencies is a big one. I expect that's why Jennifer provided her helpful comment.

If anyone is in North Carolina, NC State offers a Distance learning Ed.D. in Adult and Community Education. The program has some online classes, and courses that meet every Wednesday in Charlotte, and some quick 1 week summer classes.

At $430/hour, this 60-hour degree will cost you $25,800. Program includes evening classes, weekend classes, week-long classes, summer institutes, and electronically delivered classes.

_Peterson's Guide to Distance Learning Programs_ (2005 edn.) reports that Utah State University www.usu.edu offers a distance EdD in Curriculum & Instruction. Course delivery systems include interactive video courses at sites around the state with online components and condensed one-month summer courses on the campus at Logan with further work completed electronically. Perhaps this would be better described as a non-traditional residential program, as it is primarily education which occurs at a distant campus. At $574.40/hour for in-staters and $1509.54 for out-of-staters, this 60-hour program oughta run you between $34,464 and $90,542.40, depending on whether you're in-state or out-of-state.

_Peterson's Guide to Distance Learning Programs_ (2005 edn.) reports that Northern Arizona University www.nau.edu offers a distance EdD in Educational Leadership. Coursework is mostly at distant campuses (East Valley, Tucson, and Yuma) with some requirement to take classes in Flagstaff. The residency requirement can be fulfilled with summer-time weekend and web-enhanced courses. At $260/hour for in-staters and $610/hour for out-of-staters, this 90-hour program will only set you back about $23,400-$54,900.

_Peterson's Guide to Distance Learning Programs_ (2005 edn.) reports that the Clemson University www.clemson.edu offers a distance PhD in Educational Leadership. Their Higher Education concentration is a hybrid degree, allowing one-third of the degree to be done online. At $330/hour for in-staters and $440/hour for out-of-staters, this 76-hour degree will tally up to $25,080-$33,440.

The program at Lesley looks interesting, but it appears to me that the tuition is $735/hour for the PhD program. There are also some other expenses listed for continuation fees that look quite high, and Lesley doesn't offer all the courses a student might want to take, so the student is responsible for finding suitable classes and paying for them. There appears to be a tuition discount for outside classes, but probably not enough to cover the additional expense.

Columbia International University www.ciu.edu offers a cohort-based short-residency EdD in Educational Leadership. The degree is 51-66 hours, depending on transfer credit. They are accredited by the Southern Association. I couldn't get their tuition page to open.

Hey, I've had some weeks that seemed absolutely determined to drag on forever and I've had some weeks that just seemed to fly by. Are you saying that these courses are guaranteed to be "quick" or are they going to be a week? (Hey scare - I'm just joking. I couldn't get the smilies to work tonight)

(someday you just GOT to tell me what scaredrain means. I get this Stephen King "It" idea in my head and I'm hoping you can push it away.)

While some schools maintain similar standards... in general an Ed.D. is considered the lesser of the two.
