Are these guys still in business? How are the able to operate for this long of a period of time?

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Washington International University is an unaccredited institute of higher education based in Pennsylvania. It describes itself as a "university without borders", serving clients from around the world via distance education.

The university has not sought educational accreditation, and does not have a campus. Its only address is an office building where it receives mail and messages. The university does not offer traditional courses, and, according to a 1998 brochure, its degree programs "are primarily based on what the student has already learned".[1]

According to the Oregon Student Assistance Commission, the university operates illegally in Pennsylvania and is forbidden to advertise or offer its programs in Australia.[2]

The university is not to be confused with Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1998, lawyers from the latter institution accused the Pennsylvania university of being "nothing more than a diploma mill". [1] Representatives of Washington International University have rejected this claim.

There are dozens of fake schools that have operated for ten or more years. Sussex College of Technology lasted for 30, and would still be going if the owner hadn't died.

The FBI says it is too busy with terrorism matters.
The Secret Service says it can only handle one at a time.
The Postal Inspection Service says it doesn't have the personnel.
The Federal Trade Commission has the power to regulate use of the word 'accreditation' but has chosen not to.
The Bush administration has ended the two best detection tools available to track the phonies: they decided that the Freedom of Information Act can no longer be used to find out who has rented a post office box, and that businesses using private mailbox services no longer need to use "PMB" in their address.
The states say it should be a federal matter.
The feds say it should be a state matter.
Last one out, turn off the light.

Washington International University in Pennsylvania? Doesn't this sound about as geographically illiterate as Western Washington State University in Georgia? Or the University of Northern Washington in Hawaii and/or British Columbia?

Umm, Washington was a person before he became a state. That's why we have Washington and Lee University in Virginia.

Those legitimate schools with Washington in the name that are located outside the State of Washington seem to have been founded when Washington was a man but not a state.

Perhaps the mill operators are hoping to confuse folks with the legitimate California University of Pennsylvania?

California University of Pennsylvania is located in the city of California, which is in the state of Pennsylvania; thus, I'd say California University Pennsylvania has a legit claim to their name, as does Indiana University Pennsylvania www.iup.edu , which is in the city of Indiana, which is in the state of Pennsylvania. ;)
