LU prof burned by 2nd degree from distance ed program

Since CCU's doctorate degrees are not really accredited by the DETC, I can understand this. However, this is probably disappointing for those hoping to be grandfathered in.

(Actually its not the Texas DOE, but the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.)

Is the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board asserting that Distance Education and Training Council is substandard or merely that California Coast University is a substandard institution?

That Distance Education and Training Council is substandard. According to their site they only seem to include the regional accrediting bodies as acceptable.

While looking the site over though, it seems that, schools from other accrediting bodies can petition for acceptance. Schools like Westwood and ITT, who are also nationally accredited, have the ability to grant specific degrees. Click here for to view all these exceptions.

I think it is quite a stretch by the State of Texas to refer to CCU as a diploma mill. Diploma mills simply sell their degrees for no academic work whatsoever. CCU certainly makes their students work for their degrees. The DETC is recognized by CHEA and the U.S. Department of Education. All five branches of the armed forces have approved DETC accredited schools for education benefits. Where does the State of Texas get off holding itself up as a higher authority on the quality of education than these institutions? I thought the days of Texas being a stand alone republic were long gone. Apparently, they think otherwise.

Yet another reason for me to never live in Texas.

Good points TCord. At the most basic level, referring to a someones accredited degree as "illegal" is simply defamatory. Of course, the State of Texas will have to face other "legal" challenges in court in regards to CCU, and DETC in general. I cannot comment on who the legal action will come from.

Here is a recent response from DETC regarding this issue:

What Texas has been doing will not survive a court test. Just as the rules about faith- based schools in Texas were struck down by the Texas State Supreme Court last month, so too will this list of theirs involving any DETC institution.

The plain truth is that Texas is exceeding its constitutional authority. Its decisions about which accrediting agencies are acceptable as reliable accrediting bodies cannot trump what the US Department of Education has decided. State laws are subject to Federal laws and subordinate to Federal law.

I cannot comment on what legal action may be taken in the future, but I do know that Texas cannot prevail over the Federal government.

Alaska U had a similar list to the Texas list. Just yesterday they agreed to take CCU off their "invalid" list. Apparently it was the same list Texas is using, but they inserted the term "invalid" with the term "illegal".

Her degree is not DETC accredited considering she studied at CCU in the early/mid 1990s.

Ah, yes, the sovereign State of Texas has decided that they know better about accreditation than the real accreditation experts at the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the United States Department of Education! When will these jokers make it official and secede from the Union, since they obviously have the authority to nullify federal law on accreditation?

    Hey Ted,

A couple of days ago Alaska U agreed to take CCU of their "Invalid" degree list.

Who does the Texas Higher Ed Coordinating Board think they are?

Does the Texas Higher Education Coordinating (THEC) Board believe they are above the DETC? It's a shame and slap in the DETC's face that the THEC name a DETC accredited institution as fraudulent and/or a "diploma mill" based on their own "homegrown" THEC standards. THEC is basically implying that DETC accreditation standards are substandard when compared to THEC accreditation standards. I believe the DETC should send THEC an inquiry regarding their reasons behind slamming CCU, and CCU should initiate a "libel" lawsuit against THEC for defamation!!!

Don't bash Texas too hard guys, it's a great place to live. As far as this is concerned, the doctorate she earned is NOT DETC....that being said, Texas is behind the learning curve on diploma mills, accreditation, etc. I say we start writing letters http://www.thecb.state.tx.us/Comments/

This article makes me so angry that I can hardly see right now! What a bunch of ignorant fools!

I agree that this will not hold up when it (hopefully) reaches the federal courts. By law, Texas has to recognize schools with DETC accreditation.

    Done and done. :D

You may bash the University of Alaska as much as you please, though. We all do here in Alaska. I think they copied Texas's list so that people wouldn't think to scrutinize U of A's quality. ;)

If I read correctly, Dr. Sisk had listed an unaccredited doctorate on her academic Web site. This is not an issue with Texas and its (non-) recognition of DETC, right?

This is a moot point. The list compiled by the State of Texas does not assert that only doctorate degrees from CCU are invalid, they assert that CCU as an institution and the DETC are "substandard and/or fraudulent".

No sweat friendorfoe, not all Texans are ass backwards. You have always been cool. And Yes, an email campaign would be good. Not only to the individual in charge, but his political bosses. We must remember 2008 is approaching rapidly, thus perfect timing.

I have a real good feeling CCU will be taken off the list, and probably DETC as an accreditor. This will reach the court level if it is not resolved amicably. So be it.

    Thanks Abner,

I also requested Ashford University be removed from the list. There was a fake Ashford University selling "degrees" online a few years back that was in operation for only a short while. Although they do have a small disclaimer off to the side, it could cause confusion about my MBA. There have been fake Columbia and Stanford degrees sold as well, but I didn't see them listed. Why single out Ashford?

Yeah, I noticed that. You can see the problem this list poses. Good luck.
