Suggestions for degree from TESC or COSC?

About 15 years ago my brother in law took several classes from GA Tech but didn't graduate. He decided not to go into engineering and has worked with computers since leaving Tech. A degree would be helpful for his career, but it doesn't really matter what the degree is in.

I typed his transcript into Excel and have been trying to figure out if there is a degree he might already qualify for. If my math is correct, he has 125 credits. My first thought was to see if he had enough credits to get one of the engineering technology degrees from Thomas Edison, but he received several Ds in the engineering classes and switched majors enough times that I don't think he has enough credits to meet the requirements.

Could you take a quick look at the classes he's taken and point me in the direction of a degree at Thomas Edison or Charter Oaks that you think might be worth me looking into to see if he would qualify for it?

Here are the courses he's taken:

    CE 1600 Microcomputers in C E 3 A
    CE 3053 Fluid Mechanics 1 3 C

Thomas Edison State College will not transfer in courses with a grade of 'D'.

Bachelor of Science in Applied Science and Technology at Thomas Edison State College might be a good match between your brother-in-law's previous academic credits, his employment, and desire to earn a degree. To address some or all of the missing credit hours towards the Electrical Technology area of study (45 credit hours) he might want to complete the Electrical Engineering Technology Associate Degree at Penn Foster College.

I'm seeing what may be a pretty solid Bachelor of Science in Liberal Studies from Excelsior.

He may only need one more class (1 hour info lit) if they buy all that I did reviewing as upper level. He'd def. want to do the BS and not the BA. I'm assuming these are semester hours and not quarter hours and that 3000-4999 are intended as "upper level".

Execlsior will transfer a D for credit, many schools will not transfer a D and very few will count one "in the major". It looks like he has a depth in math and in CE and maybe an area of focus in math.

I'd certainly recommend looking at Excelsior's liberal arts degrees...

    Thanks for the help!

When I called Thomas Edison a few months ago, I was told that they do accept Ds as long as they weren't in the major.

I hadn't even thought of Excelsior. Thanks for the suggestion! Yes, the classes were semesters, and I think 3000-4000 were upper level, although some of the 2000 level classes he took sounded pretty difficult, like Calculus 4 and 5.

He took several classes over because he did poorly in them the first time, and I just posted the highest grade last night. In many of his math classes he initially made a D and then retook them later and earned a higher grade. Would that hurt him if he were to focus on math?

One more question, would FEMA credits help him?

    Thanks!

I realized it's kind of difficult to tell what types of classes he took the way I listed them in the first message, so I broke them up by discipline. I moved Statistics to math from engineering, but I'm not sure if that's correct.

I'm not very familiar with specifics at TESC and COSC but I am very familiar with the Excelsior BS in Liberal Studies.

This lineup looks very close to an immediate finish to me with the exception of the Information Literacy requirement.

The PE 2070 won't transfer in - Excelsior won't take PE activity courses.

Courses repeated for credit will not effect anything. At Excelsior, any failed classes will simply not be transferred in. Duplicates will be taken with the highest grade posted.

At this point, I don't believe he has any use for transcripting any more applied professional courses (FEMA) - this really looks like a well balanced BS in Liberal Studies to me...

I agree with CoachTurner regarding COSC if your brother-in-law wants a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Studies. Based on the detailed course breakdown you provided he would also be in a position to quickly earn a Bachelor of Arts in Natural Sciences/Mathematics degree from TESC (choose three science areas option for the area of study). So, it may be possible to earn two undergraduate degrees in a matter of months.

Thank you! I will pass the information on to my brother in law.

I don't think anyone will let you transfer in tech courses that are over 10 years old

COSC took electronics credits that were 15 years old when I got my degree.

I have completed the template for the BGS 90-credit hour degree plan using the courses provided by the original poster in this thread. This is a rough draft and the official course listings for Athabasca University should be consulted to determine the junior/senior level mapping between the student's courses and AU's to maximize the appropriate credit transfer.
