Adjunct Question- need advice

    I currently teach for two schools. One is regionally accredited and one is national accredited. I am having an issue getting a third school. How should I list my teaching experience on my resume? I have been listing both schools but I am concerned that potential employer may think I would not be able to commit to a new class/school. Should I list it as “teaching experience – schools furnished upon request?”

    I also probably need to revamp my education. I have a BS and MBA from CCU and don’t list them when I apply for teaching positions. I am pursuing a grad certificate from the University of Florida to add some strong name recognition to my resume. Should I remove the AA and Army training since it really does not matter for a teaching position?

    Below is a portion of my resume and cover letter for your review. Any suggestions would be great. And of course, the names have been removed to protect the innocent!

    Cover Letter
    Please review the enclosed resume for an online adjunct teaching position. I have several years experience as a corporate trainer as well as experience in a traditional academic setting and an online environment. My teaching experience includes field trainer for Corporate Job , substitute instructor for Advanced Career Training, and online adjunct at Nationally Accredited School and Regionally Accredited School.

    At Advanced Career Training I was responsible for teaching the Windows and DOS modules leading to A+, Network+, and MCSA certifications. I teach management and basic computer applications courses including Microsoft Office and computer ethics for Nationally Accredited School. I am also teaching more advanced computer topics for Regionally Accredited School , which includes fault tolerance and general networking.

    I am currently an Area Service Manager for Corporate Job and I have held several other positions within Corporate Job including Field Service Engineer, Field Service Engineer Trainer, and Software Application Specialist.

    As a Software Application Specialist I was responsible for training physicians and nurses on medical applications and troubleshooting high-end software and hardware problems in Florida and Georgia. As a Field Trainer, my responsibilities included creating and delivering the training material for classes covering computers and medical software. I have also been responsible for creating and delivering material for one-day nursing seminars throughout the Southeast.

    I have taught for an NA and several RA's. Here is a couple presentation methods to consider.

    Option 1: Online teaching experience xx/06 - present
    Courses taught include:
    Delivery methods used include:

    Option 2: List only the regionally accredited university name and list the Nationally accredited as "other online courses taught".

    Option 3: Leave it as it is. I think online teaching experience is valuable to list.

    I personally use Option 2, but my RA teaching greatly outweighs my NA teaching. If you are just starting out, I would stick with #3, what you have now. I've never heard of anyone getting blackballed for adjunct positions for teaching at an NA school. It's still relevant experience with the subject matter, Blackboard, etc.

    Tenure track might be a different discussion.

    Randell,

    Looks great, I was in the same position as you (Doing a DBA, working full time and teaching) and many times was turned down simply because schools would tell me "When are you going to find time to work for us with such a busy schedule?, finish your doctorate and send us your resume again"

    I think it looks good. I would specifically list the schools you have taught for (unless you are just showing "various colleges" for privacy reasons)

    One thing to think about is dropping the Healthcare Risk Management cert as in progress until you have it complete. I think it makes you looked overbooked without adding significantly to a good cv.

    "as well as a graduate certificate in Healthcare Risk Management from the University of Florida."

    Great point about dropping the UF certificate - thanks. I listed various schools, that is how I was thinking of listing it. Maybe I should list it as:

    Don't know if it is in your actual cover letter, or it was lost in the cut-and-paste, but "pursuing" is spelled wrong. (pursing)

    Cover Letter

    Hello Randell,

    Years ago, when I was trying to break into the “Major Leagues” of my profession, I faced many questions regarding how to best present myself with an effective cover letter and resume. Although I am not familiar with the idiosyncracies of Academia, I’m sure some of the following suggestion have universal applicability:

    *The content of a cover letter should be custom made: Learn as much as possible about the prospective employer and highlight your qualifications based on the firm’s needs and culture.

    *Show your diversity in terms of educational background and real world experience: You are uniquely qualified by having attended and taught in both NA and RA environments; don’t hide that fact.

    *Tell them about your ability to adapt: In today’s fast paced global environment it’s important to be open minded to change.

    *Stress your versatility as an independent thinker and your qualities as a leader, and also as an effective team member.

    I hope these suggestions help.

    I forgot to mention that both the cover letter and resume should be designed so that they are easy to read. Make sure the cover letter is general in content so that it invites the reader to follow up with the resume. If the information on the cover is repeated on the resume, you risk boring the reader. Remember, yours may be the 200th resume he/she reads today.

    Use the cover letter to tell them why you fit well with that particular organization (highlights background and experience in general terms), use the resume to tell them what you have to offer (specific education and real life experience).

    Thanks for everyones responses. Maybe they are smarter than I am. Just got another class from South University so I will be teaching 6 credits with them in a 5.5 week format in addition to the 12 credits at the other school in a 12 week format. All that with my job, the UF program, and the NCU PhD program I am falling apart. Another class/teaching course would push me over the edge!
