How did you fail teacher training at UoP?

If I make it to retirement, then I'll be teaching online significantly more.

I never paid any attention to this until just now. It's an interesting thread when you read through the whole thing. As to vincey's comment I will only say this: I've been in that lecture hall. 300 kids, freshmen, sophomores, all there trying to pick up credits. I was mesmerized by an old guy who was talking about food science. He was fun, he was smart, he gave out tons of info and he expected his students to be smart. The exams were long, multiple choice exams. Probably the same exams he'd given out for years. I learned a lot in that course. I got a good grade. Many others didn't. I wish that more of my instructors were like that man. I wish that more of my courses were like that course.

I did not post on time and did not meet the "200 word minimum" on one of the posts. It was a bad week and was involved in running a national meeting with 300+ people. Just lost focus on the UoP training. Here is the whole thread but the bottom line is (quote from one of my last posts in that thread)

    April 2008
It's over...I am a UoP failure! I will not be moving on with UoP as I did not pass the first two week training program. I posted a few things late (my fault), had problems getting into the flow of the website (my fault), had problems finding what I needed on the site (let's call this one shared fault), and was completing my Comps class for the PhD which required a lot of time and effort (my fault). Last week was a national meeting which I was involved in running and time was very limited (my fault) so I could not give UoP as much attention as I wanted. I will be going to Japan in July and would not be able to teach that semester anyway.

This speaks highly of UoP's quality control with respect to instructors. I am just pissed that I blew it. I would like to think it is their loss but that is, well, a lame way to feel better.

I was told I will have a "red mark" on my name forever. I will probably never get in with them but I spoke to my recruiter and she said to just apply in 6 months. Anyway, if anyone get into UoP, take the training very serious because they certainly do!

Time to feel sorry for myself.

Wow! are you married? Kids? Girlfriend? I'm very impressed by your time management abilities. If you were only concentrated in online teaching, you could probably make more than 100K for sure.

I wouldn't worry much about UoP, this is one of the worst schools to work for so you are not missing much here. Once you get your PhD from NCU, you could probably apply to more teaching opportunities so I would concentrate on that for now.

That is, perhaps, the biggest understatement of 2008 on this board. :D

Point yielded. You may be able to sustain a higher level than 50K per year, if you can cherry pick classes from an ideal set of Universities. I can think of two instructors who've gotten close to 80K per year but have not be able to sustain that level year on year. Something always happen. New curriculum. Scheduling changes.

Just apply again. Explain what happened. If they don't see your qualities, they are doing you a favor by NOT recruiting you again. It is funny how life works out. Nearly ever time I've been wronged, later on the person responsible suffered some horrible career mishap. I must have some sort of guardian angel... God really does take care of his people. In my opinion, you haven't really been wronged in this case, but mistreated slightly in a system that has its rules, some good and some not so good. Generally, you should have just been required to repeat the training.

    Dave,

You are right, schools and programs come and go so this is a dynamic business. I always have from 5 to 7 schools for this reason, I rank them and take the jobs based on their pay and stability. Online schools tend to be the worst in terms of stability and pay, Brick and mortar schools tend to be more stable and with higher pays. It is a business so you can make as much as you want if you treat it as such. I know of someone that hires a full time assistant for assignment and exam marking, he pays this person about 20K but he is able to make more than 100K. If you keep getting assistants you can get even more.

I've thought about that idea. If you can simply hire assistants you can teach an unlimited number of classes and simply have them do the work. I heard that this is a breach of contact and if you get caught you'll lose your job.

It sounds unethical and somewhat underhanded. If someone wants assistants then teach on-campus and hire graduate students or senior-year undergraduate students. The school is paying you (not directing this to AdamJLaw) to teach and grade assignments, tests, and examinations. If you were one of my professors I'd report you.

That's what I'm saying. It's the quick, easy and unethical way to make money teaching online.

This is a common practice for Canadian Universities. When I teach face to face classes, I get a budget for assistants that help me to grade assignments. As for online classes given at for profit schools, the instructor would need to inform the school before doing so for sure.

I personally feel it would be too much hassle the overhead to hire assistants and manage them. But if someone really wants to make more than 100K, it would be only way possible.

What university are you teaching now?
I guess it would be great if we can have a coffee and have a chat.

Often, when people post with an anonymous screen name it's because they wish to remain anonymous. I am not trying to speak for Sidney but I'm trying to gently remind people that not everyone wants their personal info splashed across the internet.

I currently teach at Axia and I am about to start teaching at Kaplan. Any suggestions on how to juggle both schools?
