    Re: OCS

Delta, you are incorrect. All branches of the armed forces and all federal positions recognize NA as being equivalent to RA. They don't make a distinction.

    Re: Re: OCS

Equivalent is the wrong word. The federal government simply accepts DETC degrees.

However, there are no ROTC programs via DETC. Additionally, a DETC degree will not qualify an applicant to work as a professor in any state university system, nor at any community college. But who would ever want to do that? ;)

Also, I am unaware of anyone who has been accepted into OCS or the FBI or any other federal department with a DETC degree. I have requested the name of just one (1) person, but, well, it hasn't happened yet.

RA has its benefits, above and beyond what DETC can offer. :)

    Re: Re: Re: OCS

I am not suggesting that the DETC is as widely accepted as RA. I am suggesting that DETC accreditation, as with other forms of NA, are accepted by the federal government and armed forces.

Delta, the following is a partial list published elsewhere on DegreeInfo of RA schools that accept NA credit. The list is from 2002 and certainly outdated. As we've seen from Excelsior, credit transfer policies change all of the time. I am sure there will be schools on this list that no longer take NA, but there will also be schools not on the list that now accept NA. The list is only meant to illustrate that what Excelsior is doing with their policy revision is NOT new ground. I have personally verified some of these schools (Liberty, Moody, Bellevue, University of Phoenix, Kaplan):

In addition, ACE mainatains a list of approximately 1500 schools that accept NA credit if also ACE evaluated. I won't publish that list here because of its length, but here are some names that may surprise you:

    Johns Hopkins University
    George Washington University
    Georgetown University
    James Madison
    George Mason
    American University
    University of New Orleans
    Rutgers
    Xavier
    Texas State University
    Texas State Technical College
    Florida State
    West Virginia State
    American Military University
    University of Wisconsin
    University of Baltimore
    Boston College
    Capella
    Excelsior
    Thomas Edison
    Charter Oak
    California State
    Mount St. Mary's
    Nazareth College of Rochester
    Charter Oak
    Penn State

The list goes on and on, literally. You're making the assumption that acceptance is equal to quality, and that's a bad assumption.

AR 601-210 (16 May 2005) refers to accredited as institutions listed in the AIPE. AIPE lists all institutions accredited by a body recognized by either USDoE or CHEA (which includes DETC and numerous other NA bodies).

9-15d(1) is the paragraph regarding OCS -- it requires 90 hours (not a degree) from an institution listed by USDoE

The word combination "regional accreditation" or "regionally accredited" does not appear in AR 610-210 Regular Army and Army Reserve Enlistment Program.

I'm not qualified to interpret the policies of the other military services.

    ---

For appointment as a Special Agent of the FBI, the agency states that "You must possess a four-year degree from a college or university accredited by one of the regional or national institutional associations recognized by the United States Secretary of Education."

That doesn't say "RA" and I find it highly unlikely that anyone posting here knows all of the details on all of the FBI hires of the past couple years in order to say "there are no employees with an NA degree".

    ---

I'm sure the intention isn't to say that RA is better than NA. In my main field of music, it is generally an accepted fact of life that NASM accreditation is "better than" RA. I understand the situation is the same in the business world.

    Just a few thoughts...

    Impressive list!

Pug, Thanks for the list. I am surprised so many RA colleges accept NA credits.

It is surprising to me because some of the courses I've seen friends and family members take from NA institutions look very mickey mouse but I guess RA schools have their fair share of Mickey mouse courses as well!

You're right! Acceptance is not equal to quality!

    Acceptance and Equality

This is more to enlighten Delta and whoever else was unhappy with RA universities accepting DETC NA or NA + ACE credits.

What about RA universities accepting Latin American universities credits ? some of these Latin American universities have professors or labs or courses certainly not equal to RA U.S. universities and colleges and yet their degrees or courses are accepted .

Did you know that , Delta ?

    Huh?

    Vnazaire,
What are you implying? That Latin American Universities are inferior to U.S. Universities?

I never even mentioned foreign schools.

    Re: Re: Impressive list!

The list I posted was from 2002. I would guess the list is longer today than it was four years ago, and I expect it will be far longer four years from now than it is today. RA has been the only reliable, known standard in this country for a very long time. As more schools and more people become familiar with NA, more schools and more people will accept it. CHEA sees the two as being comparable, thus making recommendations for an equal credit transfer policy between them. More and more schools are agreeing with CHEA.

    Latin American universities and NA

    Delta,

I am not implying anything ! I am making you realize that a good many NA courses and degrees are equal or better than the majority of Latin American universities courses and degrees .

Why am I so sure ? I have travelled and met university students from these countries ( Mexico, Guatemala, Salvador, Nicaragua, etc). Without naming one country in particular, I have seen libraries in Latin American Universities where most High Schools in the U.S.A. and Canada have more books and equipment.

I am not trying to put them down but due to budget problems, most of these universities in Latin America do not have a real University library or textbooks for students. They have to take notes from the professor lectures or computer printouts.

And Yet their diplomas and degrees are accepted by RA universities . So, why not NA courses and degrees ?

So Delta, am I implying or telling like it is.

Re: Latin American universities and NA

It seems that you have not travelled enough. Some latin american Universities have a lot more equipment and resources than Canadian Schools

In particular, the ITESM in Monterrey Mexico has facilities that I haven't seen in any University in Montreal. The school in question has US RA by the southern association of schools and colleges and AACSB for its business school. The faculty of business has been ranked among the best of the world by the financial times and the wall street journal.

They also have one of the best DL programs in latin america.

Just to mention few, you have universities like INCAE, ITESM, ITAM, Getulio Vargas that would put into shame many of our Canadian schools.

I think it is not very responsible from your part to put down latin american schools in general without knowledge that some of them have been accredited by RA and AACSB standards.

You are Missing the Point ; you are taking 3 or 4 universities in Mexico and saying I am putting them down.

Have you visited universities in Guatemala, in Cuba, in Nicaragua, in Bolivia , etc ?

Yes, SOME of Mexican universities are well equipped and RA but what about the LARGE MAJORITY of State Universities , not some private ones and the majority are State Universities.

You know very well what is the average salary of a doctor in Mexico and Guatemala and Salvador.

Have you visited these State universities libraries ? I have .
Have you visited these State universities laboratories ?

Telling the situation like it is without being politically correct is not putting them down ; it is deploring such a state due to their meagre finances.

My point is NA courses and degrees with great expensive textbooks are certainly equivalent to the products of STATE UNIVERSITIES in Latin America.

    Re: on Latin American universities

Yes, I have visited Universities in Cuba, Mexico and Costa Rica.

First, not all the Latin American Universities would be accepted as RA equivalent by all the US universities or even in Canada. Not because a university has been recognized by a Latin American goverment, it would automatically be recognized in the US and Canada.

I know this as many students from Latin American countries suffer to get their education recognized in Canada and are forced to start from zero when wanting to continue their studies in Canada.

You are assuming that all Universities in Latin American are regarded as equal and they are not. Most major Universities in the US and Canada can recognize a good Latin American school.

In the case of the University where I work, we normally give the benefit of the doubt to a student coming from any unknown University. Some people come with transcripts from schools that are not even in the UNESCO book. We normally ask him or her to take independent studies and show us that he or she is able to handle graduate work. A good student would always show his or her background with good grades in his or her independent studies.

At the end of the day, if the student can handle the graduate work, why not allow him or her to continue regardless if his or her degree comes from Latin America, Europe, Africa or the Middle East?
