Never heard of that one, but I have heard of Lovely Professional University, a properly-accredited (UGC etc.) private university in India. Name might sound a bit strange to the Western ear, but it's a high-quality school.

LPU- India's Largest Best Private University (Jalandhar, Punjab)

Were you possibly thinking of this school?

P.S. Dr. John Bear's apt remark in a thread about LPU - "Well, at least they didn't call it Sexy Professional University."

Full name: Fighting Francis, the Flaming Smelt.

According to a Shimer Blog, not officially a mascot.

"Shimer College does not have an official mascot. The flaming smelt, an unofficial symbol beloved of many Waukeganites, is no more or less a mascot than the phoenix or the squirrel."

Shimer College and the Future: A Shimerian Responds: "Shimer College in Power Struggle"

Shimer's "Flaming Smelts Gazette" is here: https://shimer.wordpress.com/

Wow! This is a Great Books school, which is unusual enough in itself. Total enrolment is stated at around 140. Here's a quote I pinched from another article:

" Harvard once called to Shimer as one of the few colleges with an “ideal intellectual climate.”

Fighting Francis, the Flaming Smelt claims to have been around since 1835. No further info on his origin -- yet.

But according to about twenty other sources, the Flaming Smelt is a mascot.

Does it matter? Shimer College has zero sports teams (yay!) , so why do they need a mascot?

At Durham College in Ontario, the men teams are known as the Lords. The women's teams are also known as the Lords. Some years ago the women's teams were adding Lady in front of Lords - Lady Lords. Now is is just back to Lords. I am not sure if it was PC then or it is PC now.

I dislike my alma mater's new name. The school formerly known as Western State College of Colorado is now known as Western State Colorado University.

It's like they wanted to split the difference between keeping the old phrase "Western State" and inserting Colorado into the name itself. Perhaps they should have picked one or the other, e.g., Western Colorado University or Western Colorado State University.

Walking a fine line there Steve, a fine line. You saw what happened with the ITT thread. This one could blow up but I won't say it, I won't start it (not going to perform a Trump-ism next).

Hey, whatever she may have been up to thirty years ago, since then she's been an accomplished mainstream actor, musician, and author.

Wasn't there a Western Colorado University back in the 70's? I think it is in the old Bear's Guides.

I have a theory about the origin of Francis:

Bunch of 1950s Shimer College students, mulling over the idea of a mascot. One asks:

"What's the most offensive, overpowering smelly thing you can think of, that can be mentioned in polite society, of course?"
"A burning fish?" suggests the class wag.

    And a smelt is born...

    J.

    * The school was founded as Mt. Carroll Seminary in 1853. Renamed Shimer College in 1950. Francis claims a D.O.B. of 1853 - but Donald Trump isn't sure. He wants to see the birth certificate.

And at Vanderbilt, where the teams are the Commodores, the cheerleaders are actually called the Commodorables. How PC is that?

Anything that close to "commode" just seems like a bad idea....
