British Computing Society Professional Examination

I hold the MBCS CITP from The British Computer Society, which is equivalent to a UK Honors degree. This can be achieved via the BCS Professional Exams comprised of Certificate, Diploma, and Professional Graduate Diploma.

Exemption is possible if one has a relevant degree plus professional level IT experience.

Mine was achieved via exemption of my BS in Industrial Engineering and 12 years IT experience along with the screening process i.e., referee reports (two referees), and professional review interview.

Most Universities in the UK, I believe, accept MBCS CITP as a qualification for entry into a graduate (post graduate in UK) program.

I do recall that BCS is licensed by the Engineering Council. BCS provides an established route to achieving Chartered Engineer (CEng) status in the UK. Professional membership holders - MBCS and above can qualify for Chartered Engineer Status.

 

It really depends where you work. I obtained few British certifications and tried to use them in Canada, nobody knew what they were as most employers are familiar with American ones such as CISSP, MCSE, etc.

British certifications are strong in Asia.

Has anybody experience in taking the BCS exams in USA? The "US" section of their website is not helpful at all.

 

There is no US center to take the exam you will need to travel to a center in Europe or other countries, not sure if there is one in South America.
Maybe Brazil.

Also the value in US is mostly for employment. There is no transcript with the certificate or diploma from BCS, unless you study and take classes at accredited school.
Without a transcript US colleges don't accept this credential in to entry in to US colleges.

US Employers don't know what this credential is.

NACES member evaluation service can evaluate the BCS Graduate Diploma as equivalent to Bachelors in IT or CS. This can help with employment in some companies.

BCS Graduate Diploma equated to BSc degree, BCS Diploma is equivalent to US Associate degree and BCS certificate to US undergraduate certificate.

In some rare cases academic credit was granted for BCS Diploma and Certificate toward Bachelors degree.
I know one case when a person got 60 credits out of 120 for such diploma. HE was able to provide official listing of classes that one would need to take at accredited provider in EU in order to take this exam.


For employment purposes mostly.

 

I agree with Steve, the BCS added the Syllabus in pdf availble on their web site. Some schools will take it.

That sucks. Due to the nature of my job, it's extremely difficult to travel out.

I am an IT professional with about 15yrs of experience (In software development and Architecture). I am looking at professional certifications in USA, but couldn't find any of some good value. I am already Microsoft-certified, so I am not looking at any more vendor certifications.

Some time back I looked at ICCP - Institute for Certification of Computing Professionals, but it seems they are falling behind. At one time, Excelsior used to grant credits for their exams. I don't know if they do still.

Any better alternatives to BCS in USA?
