On October 21, 2015, the American Council on Education announced the 111 low- or no-cost, lower-division general education courses that would be included in the Alternative Credit Project. More than 160 courses were initially submitted by the 7 non-accredited providers in early 2015 for consideration.
The 7 non-accredited providers selected to join the project include: Ed4Online; edX; JumpCourse; Pearson Learning Solutions; Saylor Academy; Sophia Learning; StraighterLine.
From the pool of submitted courses ACE, with institutional input, selected courses aligned with high-demand lower-division subject areas to undergo ACE’s credit recommendation process. The final pool of courses was based on the outcomes of the ACE faculty evaluation teams and institutional acceptance rates.

I wish this resource was available years ago when I was an Excelsior (then Regents College) student. It would have helped me tremendously.

I am too. I'd love to see this list explode. Currently, anything through Saylor is $0 plus $25 to ProctorU. That's eight bucks a credit- there is nothing less expensive on the planet today.

 

Also, it could be completely free if one could find someone willing to proctor.

 

I don't think so. I think if you complete a Saylor course OUTSIDE of the ACP, that is an option (as is using proctorU) but I think that within the ACP you have to use the proctorU company. At least that's how I'm reading it. If you browse their website, it looks to me like they still have the Saylor NCCRS or ACE option and then separately is the ACP option (with its own restrictions)
Alternative Credit Project

Remember that Saylor Academy does not and cannot “grant credit” – the option to grant credit always belongs to the college or university and will further depend on whether a course fits into your degree program. We work with a number of official partners to guarantee recognition, however, and both NCCRS and ACE have large networks of institutions that typically will give credit for these courses. Specifically:

Saylor Academy partner schools guarantee credit (assuming a course fits your degree program needs). Visit the Partner Schools page and click on each school to see details and conditions.
NCCRS maintains a list of Cooperating Colleges and Universities that have agreed to consider NCCRS recommendations for credit. You can refer your school, as necessary, to the information maintained by NCCRS on Saylor Academy courses and recommendations.
ACE CREDIT maintains a College and University Network of schools that have agreed to consider ACE CREDIT recommendations for credit.
Saylor Academy is a course provider institution in the Alternative Credit Project™ from the American Council on Education. All fourteen courses recommended by ACE are included in the ACP.
Note: always verify with your school(s) that you will be able to earn credit based on these recommendations! The Registrar and the Admissions office can offer advice on their transfer and alternative credit policies.
Proctoring
To earn recommendation for college credit, your exam must be proctored (that is, your attempt must be monitored). Our approved proctoring service is a company called ProctorU. You will be able to take the exam in a secure, quiet place with a dependable network connection; people most often take the exam at home. Each attempt will cost $25 USD (this fee is assessed by ProctorU).

For courses recommended by NCCRS, alternative arrangements with an in-person proctor are also possible. More details are in our Help Center.

 

I was able to serve as an in-person proctor on an ACE class, and it had similar language on the web site then. OTOH, they did reorganize that section of the web site, so perhaps rules are tightening. It may be worth it to check with them for some students; perhaps not for everyone: $25 is a relatively reasonable price for convenience of online proctoring.

Currently, Saylor provides a great set of GE courses for credit, self-paced and at rock-bottom price. Outstanding resource!

 

So, I wanted to point something out with these classes- if you look carefully at each of the participants in the Alternative Credit Project, you'll see that each on their own did a little "partnering" before ACP. Pay attention to the schools on those lists, because they DIFFER! In short- let's say you took Straighterline's College Algebra. SL has a partnership with Excelsior, so that's a match - but ACP does not, so that *may* not be a match.

I don't know if it's possible (but I can't imagine it's not) if it were me, at least for the time being, I would register my credit under both the ORIGINAL provider (SL, Saylor, Sophia, etc.) at ACE and then additionally through the ACP course number on ACE - just to be sure your credit goes where you want it. This doesn't duplicate actual credit applied toward a degree: college algebra is still only 3 credits.
