Then maybe they should have nominated Martin O'Malley.

Maybe they should have. While Clinton is massively capable of doing the job, she's a lousy candidate to run for the job. The Democrats did themselves a disservice by having (almost) everyone stay out of her way. Sanders' success is evidence of her weakness as a candidate--and that's within the party. In the general election, it's even worse. The Democrats can thank the GOP for doing an even worse job of it by nominating--can you believe it?--Donald Trump.

If the Democrats had run a serious slate of candidates, I have to think one of them not named Clinton would have prevailed, just like 2008. But Clinton holds a lot of markers within the Democratic party and she called them in. It's hers to win or lose now.

The Democrats went old-school and nominated the crony-est of cronies. The GOP sent out a clown car and watched an orange ogre slay them all and then take the party hostage. Wow.

I actually don't think anyone could have bumped Hillary out. There are a lot of Democrats that really want to elect a woman, so much so that every time some female politician in the party would endorse Sanders, she took a ration of crap. Also, I think she is a better campaigner than she has shown. She ran as King Log because she did not wish to campaign against the left. Better to keep the Democratic base as intact as possible.

The arguments in the article don't necessarily apply to Hillary herself. Sure, local candidates may benefit from running against Trump, but Hillary would be campaigning against Trump regardless. I don't think she will hesitate to turn to the attack.

Of much more importance is Trump's refusal/inability to fund raise. It hurts on multiple fronts. First, a lot of that fundraising would be in the form of appearances with state and local candidates, so their fundraising efforts are hurt. Second, because of contribution limits, a good bit of Trump's fundraising should also be going into the party coffers...again hurting state and local races. Finally, the party will end up spending extra money on the presidential race because Trump's campaign won't have it to spend. A triple whammy that may prove to be the real culprit in a Republican disaster.

Trump gets billions of dollars of free advertising from the media. They cover him every time he opens his mouth. No other candidate came close to getting as much coverage.

That's true. The guy says so many shocking things, I am not shocked any more. Pretty much boring now.
