Some snippets of what Manafort told the RNC.

"When he's out on the stage, when he's talking about the kinds of things he's talking about on the stump, he's projecting an image that's for that purpose," Manafort said in a private briefing.

"You'll start to see more depth of the person, the real person. You'll see a real different way," he said.

"He gets it," Manafort said of Trump's need to moderate his personality. "The part that he's been playing is evolving into the part that now you've been expecting, but he wasn't ready for, because he had first to complete the first phase. The negatives will come down. The image is going to change."

Trump team tells GOP he has been 'projecting an image'

“The negatives are going to come down, the image is going to change, but Clinton is still going to be crooked Hillary,” he added.

“Is Donald Trump running against the Republican National Committee?” asked Mr. Manafort, referring to the candidate’s unrelenting assault on what he calls the “crooked” nominating process. “The answer is he is not.”

“He gave us the mandate to bring together a team of professionals that could finish the job for him, but could also then begin to link in with the establishment institutions that are part of our party, what you represent, what the state parties represent,” he said, also alluding to think tanks and members of Congress. “We’ve started all those conversations,” said Manafort, adding of Mr. Trump, “He cares about the united team.”

As for Mr. Trump’s continual attacks on the nomination process, Mr. Manafort said he was largely focused on “transparency” and had no genuine desire to undermine the delegate-selection rules. “He is winning; he’s not interested in changing the rules,” he said.

Right. For the last 30 years this guy has kept his real personality hidden behind the massive DB he projects. Got it.

What I got from Manafort's statements is what I've been thinking all along: Donald Trump is a fake. He might be a lifelong misogynist, but he isn't as stupid and crazy as he's been acting lately. This is an act, and I can't believe that so many people are this gullible.

They're not gullible. Someone who would conclude that Trump is putting on an act might be, though.

We don't have just this campaign to assess Trump. He's been in the public spotlight for decades. Nothing he's saying or doing is inconsistent with that track record, except a tack to the right on abortion.

Manafort is pointing out that Trump is a liar by telling an even bigger lie.

Trump was a liberal for a long time up until just a few years ago. In the 80s, he said he mostly aligned with the Republicans. In the 90s and 2000s, he said he mostly aligned with the Democrats. He has inconsistently aligned himself with the Republicans and Democrats. That is his track record.

The point remains: there's nothing about Trump that everyone doesn't already know. He isn't "playing a role" like his people are now trying to say. He is what he's always been, none of it presidential.

I never said that the real Donald Trump is presidential. We'll have to agree to disagree. I don't believe he really holds the stances he claims he does. He's saying anything he can to appeal to the ignorant crowd. I've heard him talk intelligently and reasonably about politics in the past, and that's probably because he was talking about his real stances or because he wasn't trying to get votes from the ignorant crowd.
