Translation = More government regulation, more taxes & fees, more government intrusion into private & public businesses, less freedom of choice for citizens.

    Have you had enough yet?

I'm a fairly liberal Democrat but I don't like Hillary. The simple truth is that I don't know if I can trust her.

I'm not sure if any of the candidates know much about higher education; most people don't. One of my professors didn't even know who accredited our university. I'm sure most of my professors don't know the difference between NA and RA. All most people know is for-profit vs. non-profit or online vs. brick and mortar.

No, not by a long shot. I want our government to pattern itself on the other great democracies in the world so we can grow up and enter the 21st century. But it would required Americans to do that. We get exactly the government we deserve.

As for education, nothing in that article indicated increased government control. As participants on this board know, the U.S. is unique for its LACK of governmental control of higher education, with the states providing a minimum amount of regulation and the rest being handled by the schools themselves (through their accrediting agencies).

You hit the nail right smack in the middle. The sad truth is that many people are clueless when it comes to higher education and accreditation. Thus the reason why degree mills flourish. I believe Rich has done extensive research in this area. His Ph.D dissertation was on the subject of accreditation and nontraditional higher education I believe.

Wasn't Bill on the board of Laureate Education up until she announced her campaign?

Does that mean she'll ask Bill to give Laureate the $16 million back? Didn't think so. If there's any subject Hillary Clinton should avoid, it's integrity!

I agree with you. Malcolm Gladwell talks about this phenomenon - can't recall the term, but we assume other people know a lot more than they do.

While I haven't read Sec. Clinton's position on DL, I don't think it's unreasonable to be concerned about the integrity of the process. While it's possible to cheat in a traditional classroom, many outsiders have the perception that cheating is not as common since there's a warm body watching over students during tests. While DL has been around for ages (my grandfather took correspondence courses), I think that the recent growth has put non-traditional education in the spotlight. The growing pains aren't only in the technology used for DL courses, but in the perceptions of others.

I'm not sure it was Malcolm Gladwell, but "Appeals to Authority" sounds like what you may be thinking of?

The opposite of that type of thinking is or course, the Dunning Kruger Effect perhaps one of my most favorite congintive biases of all time.

It's not Appeals to Authority (I just looked it up). (I love Dinning Kruger Effect too!!)

I'll have to give it some thought. It's when people mistakenly assume that most other people are more enlightened on a topic than they are. I might be getting it mixed up with something else. I re-read his books this summer, which is why I thought it was something he said....
