    So go vote!

As a side note, we really need a term for Unitedstatesians that isn't so clumsy. "American" is not only inaccurate, some citizens of other Western Hemisphere countries find it mildly offensive.

No one should find "American" offensive because America is actually in our country's name. There is no continent called America. You're either North American or South American. People also often use Central American.

Anyway, I did the early voting thing.

This proud American will vote Tuesday and will vote a straight Republican ticket. If the vote goes as expected, all but two of our top office holders will be female.

I early voted but did not vote a straight ticket for the first time in ages. I'm upset with my party and wanted to send a message (however miniscule) that they need to change direction.

Being from the United States of America, I am 100% OK with the term "American" and am pretty meh about somebody from a country not called America finding it mildly offensive.

Early voter here...knocked it out earlier this week.

I voted two weeks ago by mail. I did not bother to vote on judge retention but later I found out the importance of this vote.

How is it not accurate? The U.S. was the first independent country in the Americas, and every other country in the Americas has a well established demonym. If anyone takes offense, it's because they want to be offended, not because they have good reason.

Whoo hoo! Proud to be named after a cartographer!

Now the spanish word, "Estadounidense", literally means "Unitedstatesian". If they can do it, why can't we? The word exists because to call someone an "Americano" basically means that you are from somewhere in the Western Hemisphere, which is like, half the planet.

As opposed to Virginia, named because Queen Elizabeth supposedly never had sex, or Dominica, named because Europeans first saw it on a Sunday, or Colombia, named for a turd that historians have been polishing for five hundred years?

Seven syllables? I'd prefer "Yanquis", shorter and cooler.

This is a solution in search of a problem. If I'm in Quito and I say, "Hola, yo soy Americano," they're not going to be confused; they're just going to roll their eyes and say, "Si, sabemos."

They won't be confused but you might be surprised at what they will be. "Americano" might be current Spanish were you travel but it sure isn't in Mexico were I spend some of my time.

Anyway, the point I was trying to make is that I am exhorting U.S. citizens to vote Tuesday and I lacked a sufficiently precise term to identify the target audience. MC quickly identified the source of the clumsy term I felt compelled to employ.

The Spanish version of his name is "Colón", so of course he would grow up to be a turd.

Avoid calling yourself this in the bad part of Queens.

I guess it wouldn't be a big hit in the Southern U.S. either.

Yes, but the country is named "Colombia" so the Latin version was used as well.

As for calling oneself "Americano" while speaking Spanish, that in particular makes no sense to me since Spanish contains a common demonym that describes us exactly.

I can't speak for any of the hundreds of millions of residents of the Western Hemisphere who speak Romance languages. No one can. I can say that, were I to identify myself in Quito or Merida as "Americano", I would be concerned about appearing as a graceless boor who is either too stupid or too arrogant to bother learning the language beyond that pidgeon necessary to order a beer and a lap dance in a tourist strip club.

If you don't see this as a problem, nothing more need be said.
