For some time now, Rush Limbaugh has promoted his Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies. Since time is allowed on his 3-hour daily program for advertising, would the Limbaugh Institute be considered a "for-profit" entity?

Mr. Limbaugh has not completed a bachelor's degree. While he is certainly in good company in that regard (Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Pablo Escobar, etc.), I'm not sure how he would seriously advance such a thing. Although I do not listen to his show, it sounds like this is more of a catch phrase for the bile he spews, rather than an actual attempt at establishing some form of tertiary institution.

    Rich,
The frightening thing is he may be seriously considering such an institute. Too many people actually believe he is a great philosopher when, in all reality, he is a talking head with one motive: "Becoming rich by telling a part of the populus what they want to hear."

I think that you both are being overly kind. In my opinion he is an evil little man who fabricates lies and twists the truth specifically for the purpose of hurting others. This is not to mention his drug addictions and sex vacations. I'm sure he is happy to be making money but I do not believe that is his primary motivation.

It's a joke, people. There is no "Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies".

Of course, Rush would be perfectly free to establish one if he likes. It's true that his personal academic credentials are a bit weak -- he dropped out of Southeast Missouri State after two semesters -- but I'm sure he could find other qualified faculty.

For example, Newt Gingrich is conservative, has a PhD, and is currently out of work. And Newt is clearly well informed about traditional marriage and family issues, since he has been through the marriage process three times (almost as many times as Rush himself).

An alternative name for the school might be "Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Republican Studies", which would yield a much more memorable acronym.

Hmmm... me thinks this thread should be moved to the political section of the forum.

Incidentally, Rush has been referring facetiously to the "Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies" for many years. It has come up in the past as a degreeinfo topic, because people apparently assume that it is real. For example, here is a thread from 2003:

I agree Rush Limbaugh does awful things and I have approximately no time for him, but fair is fair:

    • Drug addiction is a physical condition, not a moral failing.

    • From what I've heard, evidence of "sex vacations" is hugely circumstantial. (He was apparently detained once with Viagra prescribed to his doctor's name though he attested it was for his own use. This occurred on his return from a trip to the Dominican Republic, which Wikipedia says is "the Caribbean's largest tourist destination," has a huge tourist infrastructure including golf courses which I imagine Limbaugh might dig, etc.)

Prescription drug abuse, including "doctor shopping" to get multiple prescriptions for painkillers is a choice that a person makes. Every day you can make the choice to continue or you can make the choice to stop.

As for the sex vacation issue, he was stopped at DR customs with an illegal prescription of Viagra. The DR is renown for child prostitution. You can add that up however you'd like. I think the guy is a scumbag and so I'm just assuming that he's being consistent. Also, if it had happened to a Democratic politician you know he'd be making the same accusations. I'm just applying his own methods. Fair is fair.

Isn't "applying his own methods" "falling to his level?" Are you on his level, or better?

I am a small, anonymous person on an internet website frequented by a relatively small group of people. I am offering a personal opinion. It's an opinion based on facts. You may be comfortable in reserving judgement and that's fine with me. I, on the other hand, feel comfortable in making judgements on hugely public personalities who make their living doing "slash and burn" commentary. I make decisions about people every day and so do you. Who to trust. Who to like. Who to turn away. Who to dislike. Making decisions about people's character is essential in this world and we make these decisions based on the available data. There's lots of data on Limbaugh. He's an asshole, from start to finish. If you want to reserve judgement on him, well that's fine with me. Maybe that makes you indecisive, maybe that makes you a saint. I am neither.

My only problem with this is that he spends three hours a day praising people who think that people should be in jail if they use drugs in ways not approved by politicians and bureaucrats.

That happens there (and probably everywhere else) but the D.R. is more renowned for non-child prostitution. Thing is, he's a multimillionaire who lives in South Florida, so if that's what floats his boat it's not like he'd have to bother get on an airplane.

    Certainly not the latter.

Hey, if it were real, their football team could challenge the (all too real) Arnold Schwarzenegger Institute at USC (USC Schwarzenegger Institute - USC Price School of Public Policy)

As I said in the first response on this thread: "Although I do not listen to his show, it sounds like this is more of a catch phrase for the bile he spews, rather than an actual attempt at establishing some form of tertiary institution."

Yeah. By contrast Glenn Beck has a "Beck University" with what it calls "classes" and "professors," though from a glance it just seem to be some video series that are part of his online pay TV thing.
