I attended a preview of the movie "Lincoln" a few days ago. I do not know much about Lincoln or the civil war so I have no idea how accurate the story is. However I found it most interesting and will be doing some research over the next few months. The only actor I recognized or had seen before was Sally Field who did a great acting job.
Some info on the movie here Lincoln (2012) - IMDb

I highly recommend reading the book, "Killing Lincoln," by Bill O'Reilly. It really doesn't matter whether you like O'Reilly or not. None of his political opinions are present in the book. It's just a historical account of the events leading up to Lincoln's assassination. It's really a great read.

I forgot to say that I posted this in the politics section because the film concentrates on the politics of ending slavery and ending the civil war.

I watched Ken Burns' documentary on The Civil War and that got me interested in seeing this Lincoln movie. I will have to check out some books as well. Thanks for the review.

I looked up his movies and I saw "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" quite a few years ago. I had heard of some of his other movies but never saw any of them.

After reading the Lincoln-Douglas debates (among other things), my opinion of Lincoln changed from the sanitized drivel we all get while going through the American school system, to an understanding of who he really was.

Knowing that, I'm certain the movie is probably done well in terms of cinematics, but is also another advancement of the already well established fabrication of who Lincoln was.

Well, you're certainly not going to get a nuanced look at a President who presided over one of the most volatile time in our nations history. The only thing that mattered that Lincoln did was passing the 13th. That trumps all other things that he did. No matter how egregious you (and many, many other people) may think they were. Lincoln = 13th, FTW!!! If you are looking for a complete look at a president then watch Oliver Stone's or Michael Moore movies about the most evil white person to have ever walked the earth.

Oh, please. I don't like Bush or Nixon either, but Oliver Stone and Michael Moore are the last people in the world from whom to expect to get a complete look about anything.

Anyway, I think that DDL might be the first man to win a 3rd best oscar nomination for this one. I think he captures Lincolns (reported) dry sense of humor pretty well. DDL is still too short for Lincoln at 6'1" but pulls it off real well. The movie takes place towards the end of the war and the events of the movie are after Shermans march towards the sea and about Lincolns fight in the House to pass the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery.

Decent flick, but not for anyone who calls the Civil War the War of Northern Aggression. They barely mention Sherman's destruction in the South as that does not matter as much as the only thing that has ever mattered from the 1800's. Passage of the 13th. No great war battles or anything, just a political (correct) movie about one of our most famous presidents. Great set's, acting, and interesting enough to watch. I'd recommend for anyone who likes history and likes to watch when an actor tries too hard.

I saw Lincoln last night and really enjoyed it. This is a very different perspective on Lincoln from the usual stuff. There's almost nothing on the Civil War or his assassination. Rather, it's about Lincoln, the politician, and what he had to go through to get the 13th amendment to the constitution passed. Great flick!
