The school provided me with an editor who has quoted a final review of my dissertation for $1500.00. I’ve had the editor for my dissertation proposal, and have already paid her $1200, however, in addition to this $1200; she will require an additional $1500.00 for the final review. As far as doctoral studies go, is this price reasonable? My dissertation is about 230 pages [excluding the references and appendices]. Of the 230 pages, about 10 are graphs and figures [etc.]. The school will permit me to select my own editor, if I was able to locate one willing to charge less.

The term "shakedown" comes to mind.

I assume you haven't done a dissertation, given that comment. Perhaps those of us who have might chime in.

A lot of this has to do with what the editor was tasked to do. It sounds like the editor is asking for about $150 an hour (assuming 8 hours to review and edit the proposal and 10 more to do the dissertation), which isn't such a bad price. Again, this depends on what your asking for and if your getting it. If you're asking for and getting just proofreading, it might be a little steep. (Might be.) But if you're getting editorial help with how you're shaping your chapters, your hypotheses, your arguments, your literature review, your findings, your conclusions, etc., then you're probably getting a good deal.

Finally, given that the OP isn't obligated to go with that editor--or, possibly, even one at all--this hardly represents a "shakedown." But that perspective is certainly understandable if one has no real experience in this area.

While I would certainly not call it a shake down I would say it is not too competitive either. I was able to have a friend (who owed me a favor) do mine for about $500 or so. He has a PhD in English from Auburn. I will email you his information, he is in Jacksonville. I have to warn you - be is good but not really fast.

Sounds high to me, but if it gets you done, than it is probably worth it! I would ask for recommendations on PhinisheD.

    (A little off subject)

I had no idea what was involved in a PhD program until I read this article:

Ph.D. Programs Are Rigorous Educational Experiences

I am amaze at the process. It sounds like online students may actually benefit from their studies, seeing that time management and discipline are a big factor in completing the who procedure.

Lady, I hope all goes well with your paper! :D

A member of my family earned a Ph.D. in marine sciences from a good school and did not use an editor (I remember she spent 18 hours a day for several weeks "polishing" her dissertation).

You probably need an editor more if you are doing a PhD by distance learning, due to the lack of opportunity for dialog with the committee. another reason is that the constant revisions that you make tend to garble things somewhat, so another eye can help reorient the direction.

BTW, I am getting helpful comments along the way at UFS, so I probably will not need an editor at this school, when I am ready for the PhD. I may hire someone to give a once -over for the Harvard format, since I am used to APA.
