I find this admirable

Amusingly, Jim Moran, the Congressman who ostensibly represents people in my area, was also arrested, but the media didn't really care about that. But in fairness, I suppose Clooney's much better looking, not to mention more interesting and personable.

I admire anyone who stands up for their convictions, even if they are outnumbered 100 to 1. The naysayers will always abound.

I think that the thing that I like the most about it is that someone like Clooney (or Sean Penn in Haiti) could easily sit back in the comfort of their mansion and write a check for this cause or that cause, maybe go into a studio and make a commercial asking for people to donate money or whatever and then go on some talk show to say how much they care and blah and blah, blah. Instead they're personally out there, learning the facts, seeing the reality and at least to some small extent, putting themselves on the line. Not like some useless fucking Kardashian. Sorry, I'm not supposed to say fucking.

Teehee....you said "facts" and Sean Penn" in the same paragraph. Actually I thought what Clooney did was admirable and I'm sure Sean Penn tries really hard, but sometimes I have to wonder how much of this stuff is publicity stunt and how much is authentic. In this case I believe it was authentic...now if Sean would just let his actions speak for him instead of his mouth he'd be good to go.

Well, you may know more about it than I do but I've heard that he's spent a lot of time and money trying to help the people of Haiti. I think that one of the problems for celebrities taking up causes is that they put themselves in a position to get just the sort of criticism you've provided . . .

"They're just doing it to get their name in the paper and their face on the news..." However, even if they're doing it selflessly, part of the advantage of being a celebrity is that it draws attention to the cause when you become involved. It raises awareness. For example, if I quit my job and moved to Haiti to help those people then no one would know or care. If Sean Penn does it then he runs the risk of people saying that he's just being a media hound. But maybe his motive for being a media hound is to draw attention to the situation, not necessarily to himself. I'm guessing that if he just wanted to get on the evening news he could do something like Charlie Sheen.
