To me it just seems that regardless of his accomplishments in Texas, he was very unprepared to move up to this next level of political life.

Absolutely. Also, I don't think Perry is very smart. It's catching up with him. He can't compete with the resourcefulness of Gingrich, Romney, or even Paul.

Being a proud Texas resident I can say apologetically, Perry is borderline retarded (no offense to our mentally handicapped brethren). He had the governorship served to him on a silver platter here and has ridden on the coat tails of George W. for a long time. He really isn't a conservative, he isn't anything actually. He is a Mitt Romney with a Texas twang and will swing whatever way the polls tell him.

Watching this guy's candidacy implode has been absolutely fascinating. It is astounding when you realize that Perry has been a professional politician for almost 30 years. I have to wonder why he wasn't tested earlier in his career.

That's what's frustrating. This guy has simply been extraordinarily lucky.

Yeah, this has been interesting. I thought Gingrich would have more traction as he was seen as the Uber Conservative during the Clinton days, contract with America, etc. I recall Republicans practically kneeling at the altar for Newt and his aggressive bare knuckle fighting. But then certain things came out. The family values guy was cheating on his wife as he was accusing Clinton of the same. After all, Gingrich, like John Edwards cheated on their cancer ridden wives didn't they?

In the end, The Newt has too much baggage. He is being weeded out like John Edwards was. Good riddance. Too bad, I really like Edwards platforms, especially on giving tax incentives to companies to hire for American jobs. This populist theme needs to be picked up again by the Dems. Anyway, Gingrich has suffered the same fate.

As far as Perry? Well, others have said it for me. Others like FriendorFoe.

    Take it easy,

Every politician has a defining moment, good or bad, in his/her career. For Perry, it was most decidedly bad when he used the word "heartless" in reference to illegal aliens.

I never would have guessed that a career politician could so badly misjudge public sentiment as he did in that case.

Besides Perry, Newt Gingrich and Michelle Bachman have also failed to meet the filing deadlines. Not a good thing for any of them.

My personal favorite memory of the Republican debates was when Rick Perry tried to accuse Mitt Romney of being a flip flopper and failed miserably. At the very beginning you see Mitt with that fake smile he often has when people attack him. However, at the end of Perry's incoherent ramble, Mitt, for a split second, has this giddy little smirk on his face where he knows that Perry made himself look like an idiot. It was like he thought "This guy is my main competition? I wonder which suit I should wear for the Republican National Convention?"

Worse than this? Rick Perry's drunken speech (3 minute edit) - YouTube :tapedshut:

IMO, none of the GOP contenders are too remarkable. And Obama should be vulnerable as regards reelection; nonetheless, with this present group of hopefuls … who knows (?).

Conservatives (at least the ones I hang out with) are pretty forgiving about alcohol-fueled mistakes. I actually laughed when I first saw that, and thought to myself "Maybe he is a regular guy".

His comments about illegal aliens sent him over the precipice, from which there is no return as far as the Republican nomination.

Amazingly, in that interview, his answers seemed well thought out and articulate all the way up until he was asked to answer for his previous comments. Then, he started stuttering and weakly circumvented.

Maybe he needs massive amounts of liquor to function better?

I know that for me, it's easier to write a research paper when I have my trusty sidekick, Miller Lite, with me. :happysad:

Miller Lite? :irked: I'd rather drink beer.

My brother-in-law always has a keg of Miller light on tap at his house. In draft it really is most delicious, although I do admit to perferring the more tasty micro-brewery style beers.
