Obama Admin Seals Records of Murdered Border Patrol Agent Implicated in Fast and Furious | The Weekly Standard

The Obama Administration has abruptly sealed court records containing alarming details of how Mexican drug smugglers murdered a U.S. Border patrol agent with a gun connected to a failed federal experiment that allowed firearms to be smuggled into Mexico.

This means information will now be kept from the public as well as the media. Could this be a cover-up on the part of the “most transparent” administration in history? After all, the rifle used to kill the federal agent (Brian Terry) last December in Arizona’s Peck Canyon was part of the now infamous Operation Fast and Furious. Conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the disastrous scheme allowed guns to be smuggled into Mexico so they could eventually be traced to drug cartels.
Link via Judicial Watch. The murder of a U.S. Border Patrol agent is related to the Justice Department willingly turning over thousands of guns to Mexican criminal gangs, and Obama administration is hiding information about his death from the public. Amazing.

I agree. Fast & Furious didn't get as much press as it deserved. This, IMHO, is in large part due to how bad 2 Fast 2 Furious and The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift were. A large part of what made the original The Fast and The Furious so good was the cast. While I don't expect sequels to surpass the original film, how can you have a Fast and Furious movie without Vin Desiel? And no, the 30 second cameo in Tokyo Drift does not count.

I think that bringing back the original cast in Fast & Furious was the best idea. Although I was a little disheartened when they killed off Michelle Rodriguez, overall it was a good flick. I have not seen Fast Five yet, but considering that it is set in Rio (one of my favorite cities) and is co-starring The Rock (one of my favorite action stars), I expect it to be a good film.

Incidentally, I heard a spoiler about the end of Fast Five that hints that Michelle Rodriguez's character Leticia may be making a return appearance in the upcoming Fast Six movie (scheduled for a 2013 release). It should be a must see.

Fast & Furious was an absolute disgrace, and Eric Holder should be facing at least perjury charges for lying about it in front of Congress.

Whoever the Republican nominee is for 2012 should beat this drum with both hands.

Liberal bias in the media. Nothing unusual about it. Most media employees are die hard democrats and will not investigate a story that undermines their idea of social change.

Yeah! I hate how this story only accused Obama of covering up a murder rather than outwardly accusing him of pulling the trigger. Liberal bias is everywhere! You know, like all of those liberals on the #1 news network in the country, those liberals at the
most widely circulated newspaper in the country and of course the scores of liberals who absolutely dominate talk radio.

MC you have to admit that what the most ransparent administration ever is doing is actually one hell of a tactic. They'll never have to account and they can always be offensively defensive and vice versa, all the while having no obligation or regard for truth and justice at all in this case. In my eyes, I can’t think of a more concise way to admit that you are operating from a corrupt platform.

This administrations propaganda is actually very efficient. Obama and his progressive party has mastered the art of propaganda and now seem to have realized that censorship only enhances those efforts. Of course, their media partners play a key role and are happy to do so, otherwise, this would be the biggest story going.

And when we talk of media we are talking about the ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, NYT, etc. the biggies out there. We're not talking about Fox news (which I don't watch and I know you certainly don't so why even bring it up?) or the political clowns and shrieking attention whores who inhabit the radio dial.

    :iagree:

The Obama administration has established, probably, the closest thing to a cult of personality that this country has ever seen.

I just think this is how politicians are and will be for quite some time. It's quite disheartening to realize that they are all telling us what we want to hear, staging what they think they want us to see and doing things behind our backs that we probably as a whole do not agree with. I cannot put my finger on when this happened but it seems to me that it is not that recent a phenomenon.

I don't think it will get better. The status quo works for too many pepole right now. Myself included, why would I want monumental change in any way? I'm comfortable and maybe that is the rub.

My thoughts are wondering, talk to you later.

Compare Iran/Contra coverage to this Fast&Furious coverage in the media. Can you see a difference between the two?

Good luck finding that story in any mainstream media outlet. Liberal bias in the media is so pervasive, it's not even worth debating.

I highly recommend you read Bias by Bernard Goldberg.

Good point about Iran/Contra. I remember seeing that on the TV all the time when I was a kid.
There is a video of then senator John Kerry grilling Ollie North on his personal security expenses. Apparently North installed a very high end security system in his home and Kerry asked why. North replied that he is afraid for his family's safety. Kerry asked who are you afraid of and North said Osama Bin Laden. Kerry laughed it off not knowing who Bin Laden was. Tragic.

Do you guys really think that Fast & Furious is at the same level as Iran/Contra?

Worse....Iran/Contra at least had the goal of freeing American. What was the goal of selling weapons to Mexican drug cartels?>

That was PART of the goal of Iran Contra (the Iran part). Lets not forget that the other part of the goal was funding a civil war in Nicaragua after being expressly forbidden to by congress.

The purpose of ALLOWING weapons to be sold to Mexican drug cartels (from what I understand) was to track the weapons to "bigger fish" in hopes of making arrests of higher level cartel folks. Keep in mind that Fast & Furious was just the latest mini operation under Project Gunrunner, which started back in 2005. In fact,Operation Wide Receiver, which was started in 2006, appears to be almost identical in method (if not in scale) as Operation Fast & Furious.

Honestly, F&F looks like a monumental case of reckless incompetence on the part of the ATF, and (possibly criminal) CYA on the part of the Attorney General. Whereas Iran/Contra looks like a monumental case of the White House attempting to circumvent the authority of Congress, which in turn lead to a massive (and definitely criminal) coverup/CYA on the part of members of the Administration.

I'm not defending Iran/Contra, just pointing out that the overall goal was noble and beneficial to Americans.

And how has that worked out? The guns WERE NOT tracked, they've accounted for who knows how many murders in Mexico, and also the murder of a US Border Patrol Agent.

How many murders were committed with Project Gunrunner weapons? I don't recall any US law enforcement officers being murdered with them.

You'll get no argument from me....if I were in charge of such things, I would have already convened a grand jury to investigate Holder and the leadership of the ATF over this absolute disgrace.

That is untrue. Tragic U.S. Senate: Reference Home > Is it true that . . . > Oliver North

Fast and furious was aimed at gun control measures being justified via ATF policy (versus legislation) in the Southwest. This is nothing new to us in Texas, for example in Houston the ATF went to a gun show and began gathering sales information at the show. They would then show up to the neighbors houses of those who purchased firearms and ask them questions like “were you aware that <insert name here> purchased an assault rifle yesterday…blah, blah, blah”. They would then ask neighbors to be on the watch for any suspicious activity, etc. and report it back to them. The NRA took legal action to stop them from doing this further but not before some legal wrangling. So shortly after the ATF decided to just visit the homes of people who purchased a given firearm at a gun show and would ask to see the gun (presumably to ensure the new purchaser was not in fact buying it for someone else). After that the ATF restricted the number of guns people in the Southwest were allowed to buy within a given time period. Not that this last one bothers me but it’s the whole camel’s nose in the tent thing.

Fast and furious was supposed to get evidence to justify draconian policy and enforcement within the ATF and to appeal before the federal House to get gun control laws passed. Unfortunately all it did was arm cartels and result in the death of at least one cop. The Justice Dept. lied and covered up, those in charge of the mission were “transferred” as opposed to fired and Eric Holder (I believe) goes before Congress telling them that a lie is determined by your state of mind, not by what you say. Honestly I hope the next administration does the right thing and brings criminal indictments upon those who were involved in this mess.

    Exactly....well-stated.

One thing that's frustrating is the opinion among many gun owners that law enforcement is anti-2nd Amendment, when nothing could be further from the truth. While some high-profile police chiefs and commissioners (who are just politicians with badges) are in favor of gun control, the overwhelming majority of street cops support the rights of law-abiding citizens to own firearms. I belong to a couple of police message boards, and the rank-and-file cops are beyond upset about Fast & Furious, including its orginal intent to make private gun sales the boogey man of crime in America.
