I wonder what the future health care costs will be to treat conditions like obesity and early on-set juvenile diabetes by feeding school kids crap?

    Here is another interesting slant:

"A group of retired generals advocating for healthier school lunches also criticized the spending bill. The group, called Mission: Readiness has called poor nutrition in school lunches a national security issue because obesity is the leading medical disqualifier for military service".

    Incredible man!

Future health care costs? What about the current ones? But I said during the Obamacare debates, if members of Congress were serious about health care costs they would at least stop federal meat, dairy, and corn subsidies.

Also, my favorite comment so far on this was from a lady who said she went to her gardening supply store all the time but had never seen pizza seeds.

Here is a link to a news article about the bill that Abner is alluding to in the title of the thread should anyone have come here expecting content to actually discuss: Pizza As A Vegetable? Congress Proposes New School Lunch Bill | Fox News

Unless things have been scientifically reclassified, tomatoes are fruit. Next up, this isn't new. Reagan era Republicans pushed this same reasoning, with Aramark and other large catering conglomerates footing the bill.

Ay, ay, ay. Somehow, this gets repeated a million times a day and people accept it as fact. It is not. No offense, but it kind of drives me crazy that it never dies. Tomatoes are botanically a fruit but culinary a vegetable. Now, there is a big distinction between the two ways of classifying fruits and vegetables. If we follow your reasoning then squash, pumpkins, eggplant, corn, cucumbers, wheat, rice, and certain types of pepper should all be considered fruits. This is a problem in that it would force us to redefine both the culinary definition and the nutritive definition of what these things are :grumble:

Vegetables get pretty complicated, too. There is no real scientific definition of the word "vegetable" since it pretty much means any edible part of a plant that is not a fruit. "Fruit" in this case refers to what is culinary a fruit. Scientifically speaking, much of the "vegetables" we eat are not "vegetables" but are actually leaves, stems, roots and of course, fruits.

Of course we can get even more complicated if we like. Nutritively speaking, mushrooms are a vegetable, even though scientifically they are a fungus and even though the culinary definition of vegetable technically requires them to be plants. :hmmm:

Way to go congress. Yet another reason to have a part-time legislature.

Anyone else remember the big stink during the Reagan administration when some federal agency tried to list ketchup as a fruit for school lunches?

I will say this again. Tomatoes are scientifically fruit. No amount of "culinary science" is going to make that incorrect.

When the culinary definition has anything to do with nutrition then it can be part of the argument about nutrition. The fact of the matter is that putting fresh fruit and vegetables in a public school cafeteria is expensive. Of course the tomato paste is a vegetable when the argument is actually about cash.

Ok, fine, then corn, red peppers and oats are fruits, too, since they meet the same definition of "fruit" that tomatoes do. Also, vegetables don't exist. :cool2:

Wait for it, but I am sure that hearings on steroids in some professional sport are on the agenda before any sort of demonstration of financial sanity.

The steroid witch hunt was embarrassing. I can't believe our tax dollars paid for that bs.
