OK. We want to use diplomacy. Diplomacy needs something to back it up. Aircraft carriers are the big stick that backs up that diplomacy.

Three former senior U.S. military officials warn that any military action against Iran would have "disastrous consequences" and urged Washington to hold immediate and unconditional talks with Tehran.

When Israel destroyed the nuclear reactor Iran was building in the 1980's, what were the "disastrous consequences"?

The words "Bush" and "diplomacy" are an oxymoron.

Why is this hard to understand. Diplomacy with lairs is worthless, and their faith allows them to give there word to us and break it. Wake up

Diplomacy is what happens after i get done kicking your butt, or am about to kick your butt and you know it is coming. Hopefully this will work out in the later scenerio, but with there announce on the 11th that could change alot.

here is the story about the Iranian announcement : http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3360816,00.html

So here is the questions for all the anti-war folks. If we sit on our hands and allow the Iranians to ge a bomb, and they are getting close with NK help, what do you do in response the the nuking of Isreal. ANd what is the appropriate isreali response.

I know what it will be....

Wake up man....Bush may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but even a complete idiot should able to realize that this guy in Iran is a threat, and could cause total upheavel extending from the middle east. Notice he is getting buddie-buddie with ole' Hugo "the Dictator" Chavez down there too?

I guess we could wait 30 years, loose 1/2 million people in a catastrophic war against technologically equal islamic nutz and there allies..Id rather do something about it now...This is that Candy A$$ Carters mess..And we are still cleaning it up

I could be misremembering, but I think that was Saddam's reactor in Iraq...

P.S. There was an article in the NY Times last week talking about Chirac's "mistakes" during a recent interview. Note that he mentioned that a missile launched by Iran would be destroyed before it had reached 600 meters in the air, and could be done so by multiple countries. If Chirac was being truthful, he has revealed something interesting about satellite missile defense: the only (conceivable) technology that could destroy a payload within 2,000 feet or so of flight would be a particle beam weapon of massive proportions in high orbit. The white hats must have one or more of these...

I was Iraq, not Iran last time...unless someone has a crysal ball into the next couple of months because the Isrealis are going to wipe them off the face of the map if they come up withe a nuke. There was a plan leaked in a UK newspaper a couple of weeks ago about a pre-emptive attack on Iranian facilties that included bunker busters followed up with TACTICAL NUKES.

At that point all this babble we go through here wont really matter. It will be ON. Every Muslim state will probably throw in ASAP, including Eygpt, Syria, and Jordon. Isreal will in turn transform their lovely deserts into sheets of glass also. At this point, the Eurpeons will probably blame the Isrealis and will condem them in the UN, but that will be it. The big wildcard here are the Russians, but they are smart opputunist, and World Wars have been pretty expensive for them in the past. This leaves several nations like SA, Kuwait, Paks, the Afgans, and others in a funny spot. But already some of these nations are distancing themselves a bit..

Just my thoughts, but everyone here knows 2 things for sure. #1 the Isrealis will not take any crap off anybody. The will do it if they think Iran is getting close. #2 The Islamic Community worldwide would go completely Ape-$h!t if there were mushroom clouds over Tehran.

Not a good situation for us. Is cold here and I need oil. BUT maybe, just maybe, and Big nasty shooting match will get everyone attention. Despite the upheaval, the body count in this whole conflict, 9/11-present, has been EXTREMELY low as compared to other conflicts so I do not think people are prepare for a real war scene.

They're installed next to the railguns on the Air Force's Orion drive ships. Well, maybe not, but it would be pretty cool to have a small fleet of them cruising around the solar system....

I always like a future weapon from a novel called "Thor Rounds"

Take a satellite and mine some iron ore from the moon or put it into orbit You need alot, so mining up there is more effecient..Anyway, you take large rods of ore, several tons, and coat them in heat resistant ceramic like on the shuttle. Then, and add some guidance like fins and GPS, attach to a satellite, and bingo, crowbar from space...SMACK

Drop it from high orbiton on a naval formation? Tidal Wave city, not to mention the amount of displaced water that would swallow up ships. Or on a base of underground facility. grin... Nice Crater huh? To many options, and no fuel or fire, just gravity...isnt science beautiful!! :D

I like that! I'd get the iron from an asteroid, though. Even getting it out of the Moon's gravity well would be expensive -- otherwise you might as well just shoot a railgun from the Moon's surface Heinlein-style.

A railgun would be good, because an object would not have any speed untill it left the satellite. Then it would start to speed up, we could shoot a steel rod out of a railgun at ungodly speeds. The only issue i see with the moon is limited targets depending on the rotation of the Earth, BUT I bet you could figure that one out with some fancy math, then calculate the angle and speed to drop it out of the line of sight using the earth gravity.....
