I'm guessing a sizable portion of the 20% who still "strongly approve" of Bush at this point are members of DegreeInfo! (Orson, Charles, gkillion, etc.)

After that, I'm not sure who is standing up to be counted, except for his obvious "base" of rich corporate exploiters of all that was decent and good in American society.

So... when we add all those numbers together, I still come up short. There must be a few more conservative boards out there where the rest of the 20% are lurking....

    Hey Carl,

It only gets worse and worse for Dubya. Interesting article.

President Lincoln was right. You can't fool all of the people all of the time

Interesting side note: The Senate just passed its proposed budget including gutting ANWR protections and doing some other icky anti environmental stuff, I guess. But in the HOUSE, the ultimate, hard right wing HOUSE, Republican members are very concerned about the reaction of their constituancy to these measures. (NPR this morning)

I am seeing what I think is growing daylight between the Administration and Congress and between the Administration and a large majority of the American people.

Continuing to pursue tax cuts for oil companies and other big corporations and wealthy individuals while cutting Medicaid and food stamps and running a HUGE deficit is beginning to scare the bejeezus out of the more thoughtful members of both Houses. And so it should.

Dumping Miers because the Right didn't like her was an unfortunate political move, I think, since it seems to broadcast the message that the President is a puppet of the Religious Right (which he's not, BTW. He's a representative of the ultra wealthy and powerful business interests he grew up with. Not a puppet so much as a partner.)

OTOH, I still think Judge Alito is a good choice. Probably a better choice, actually. I hope the Senate doesn't get into a political donnybrook over it.

Cuts in the Medicaid and Food Stamps programs? How much?

I don't recall the figures given. It WASN'T anything like abolishing the programs (which are HUGE). But it SMELLS bad.

Listen tomorrow; I'm sure they'll continue to cover the story!

Don't get too excited, Carl. I don't think that Bush's sagging poll numbers mean that the country is embracing your agenda and your rather hysterical hatred of republicans.

On some days the people that you hate so much are "rich corporate exploiters" in powerful cars and suits. (Nice retro-Marxist sound to that: Oppose the rich corporate exploiters! Power to the People!) But on other days your enemy are all Southern born-again yahoos in rusty pickup trucks. (Yee-haw! Let's us go kick some faggots, Clem!)

Pick one insulting stereotype and then stick with it. You're confusing those of us who aren't as smart as you democrats.

    BillDayson,

Unfortunately, you are correct. The Democratic Party is ALSO suffering falling poll numbers.

Essentially, the people are getting to the point where they don't trust ANYBODY in government.

I'm not sure I blame us!

If you care to do any research, you will see that the last eight presidents had poll numbers just as low in their second terms.

Carter, a one-termer, was just as low.

FDR was just as low in his second term.

It's not unusual for presidents to score low in their second terms.

That's very true and you didn't even mention Truman.

But what's also true, or at least common wisdom, is that the opposition party has the opportunity to pick up seats in Congress.

    Usually.

That is why I find the Dems poll numbers so disappointing. I think we're going to throw away a golden opportunity in 2006.

Here is another article that mentions not only falling polls, but also erosion of support among GOP for Dubya.

Reports are that the ABC and CBS polls were biased. Both surveyed more Democrats than Republicans.

Also, remember, GW has three years to go. Much can happen in that period of time.

Having said this, and having been a Bush supporter since 2002, I would like to see Rove and Cheney go. They are dead weight on this Admin.

Where do you get the idea I’m a Bush supporter? Just because I find your ad hominem attacks to be nothing more than a regurgitation of Michael Moore propaganda? Or maybe it’s my disgust with the constant disingenuous assaults on Bush by the Left?

While it’s true I come down on the Right side of most issues, I’m far from a Bush toady. At this point, I’m more anti-Left than pro-Right. What I find most upsetting is the constant barrage of fallacious attacks from the Left and the media. It’s no wonder Bush’s poll numbers are so low. From the day he took office the Left has claimed he stole the election. They used forged documents to concoct a false story. They claim he lied about Iraq. In 2004, Ohio didn’t count minority voters. He gets criticized for not responding quickly enough to the tsunami. Then he responded only for photo ops in Florida. Then he was too slow again in New Orleans. Now the media has the entire administration guilty of outing a CIA agent who was already outed by her media whore husband. The Left thinks that if they repeat a lie enough times, it will eventually become true.

All this time the Left has criticized every move Bush has made, not one Democrat has ever proposed a solution or a plan for anything.

Even if I did lean left on most issues, I would be embarrassed to call myself a Democrat. If these people actually believed the crap they spew, I could at least respect them for upholding their positions. But the point of their attacks is nothing more than an attempt to embarrass Bush. They can’t uphold their positions because they don’t have any. I have little respect for people who only point out problems but never propose solutions.

    Outstanding post, gkillion!

The context of your post is one of the reasons I began to take a second look at GW after 2002. I didn't vote for him and didn't like him.

However, I began to see how those who opposed him simply did not tell the truth about him and I saw him constantly viciously maligned to points and depths no one deserved.

Many on the Left and the Democrats are absolutely horrible. Look at what they are doing to Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele. He is black and a Republican.

He is seeking the U.S. Senate seat. He is being called "Uncle Tom" and has been peppered with Oreo cookies at speaking engagements. He has been depicted in black face.

Inexcusable, simply inexcusable! All this is away beyond the pale of reasonable, intelligent debate and political disagreement.

    Nosborne:

Give the Republicans more time. I can assure you more scandals are to come. At the rate they are going, I think we can do pretty good in 2006 and 2008. I know I am personally gearing up for a grass roots level movement in my area, and there are many more behind me.

    keep your chin up brother!

I guess that just about all that's left to blame is the "left leaning, biased media".

Well, I am not so sure. They MIGHT lean the other way. Certainly, they aren't little mom-and-pop operations; the media are HUGE multinational corporations, friends.

Maybe support for the President is down because people remember what he said and then saw what he did. Or didn't do.

And isn't Rush Limbaugh the biggest draw in radio? And who could ever accuse FoxNews of being left wing?

Nope. I don't think that excuse will cut it. This Administration is in trouble because the President and his advisors and his more-or-less captive Congress have screwed up bigtime with domestic disaster relief management, ill advised and irresponsible tax cutting and the ballooning deficit, an unnecessary, expensive, bloody, and unprovoked war in Iraq, an explicit disinterest in Osama Bin Laden (remember him?), a perceived anti environmental agenda, far too cuddly relationships with oil companies and drug makers, both of whom are enjoying record profits...

Heck, even MALLARD FILMORE denied being a Republican!

And us DEMOCRATS are in trouble because we haven't demonstrated the spine necessary to FIGHT.

Sheez! Your reply made me laugh out loud for real - at myself as much as your post.

    My response?

I rather like mixing it up to keep y'all confused.... See? I'm picking up the "southern born-again yahoo" lingo a bit my own self! In fact we was plannin' on headin' down to the general store later in the day to git us some new shells for the shotgun!

Once again...Rush Limbaugh is not a major news outlet. He has a CONSERVATIVE talk show. You know what to expect when you listen to Rush. Oh, you left out the NYT, LAT, WAPO, NBC, ABC, CBS, MSNBC, and CNN.

How? First of all the situation in NO was not nearly as dire as the media portrayed it (10,000 dead). And...it's been shown time and again that 90% of the problems were the result of incompetence and corruption at the state and local levels.
Did you give yours back? Or did you use it to spur the economy like everyone else did?

Of course war is expensive, what war is not?

This has been the least bloody of any war this country has ever fought. Nearly 1,000 American soldiers died in one day in Exercise Tiger in 1944. If todays media had been around back then, there would never have been a D-day.

How many UN resolutions do you have to ignore before you provoke action. It was only unprovoked because you can't provoke the UN to do anything. Especially when they're all getting kickbacks from Saddam.

You mean the media is no longer interested in him. Bin Laden, if he's alive, has for all intents and purposes been neutered.

You mean drilling for oil in an area that is covered by ice and snow for ten months out of the year. Why is it that the Left criticizes our dependence on foriegn oil, but doesn't want to do anything to relieve it?

I think that this thread started with the President's abysmal poll numbers. Whether you or I believe to be true (and we will never agree) the fact remains that even the Republicans in Congress are starting to want to distance themselves from this Administration. I don't blame them. Perhaps you do?

People don't need to justify their political opinions. They can vote any way they like for any reason or no reason. And right now, with 2006 election campaigns starting, it looks to me like the handwriting is on the wall. Or at least, that Congressmen think it is.
