Well, it's done. He's confirmed and that's that. We'll soon see whether my "read" on Roberts is accurate... I'm glad it was accomplished with a minimum of fuss and feathers. EVERYONE agreed that he is a brilliant, hard working, scrupulously ethical lawyer. So conservative or not, the right thing happened. I will now make a prediction: The President will appoint someone very like Chief Justice Roberts for the open Associate Justice slot. Better keep your phone line clear, little fauss!
It's official. He's sworn in. I think that he's going to go with a conservative. My reason for saying that is because Roberts seems like a swing vote on the court, someone who could go either way on an issue depending on the arguments. He resembles Sandra O'Connor more than William Rehnquist, at least philosophically . Obviously Bush isn't someone to push the balance of the Supremes to the left. So now that he's replaced the O'Connor moderate slot, he needs to fill the vacant Rehnquist conservative slot with another conservative. And when that happens, the Democrats, newly emboldened by the DeLay fiasco, are probably gonna scream up a storm.
It might be too soon to speculate on which direction his judicial opinions will go now that he's been sworn in. What I'm wondering right now is how accepting the septuagenarian Supreme Court judges will be to this 50-yr.-old whippersnapper with less experience as their Chief Justice. Kit
Actually.... I once read many if not most Supreme's do not want the Chief Justice position. It is more of a full time gig where the others have a lot of time to travel around and lecture. They have more time to get their ego's stroked....
