Now that Judge Roberts' nomination has been changed to fill the Chief Justice's slot, I suggest that GW nominate ...

    Jeanine Pirro http://www.jeaninepirro.com/bio.cfm

This would allow the Republicans to get a qualified female candidate on the court without a huge battle AND allow Pirro to get out of her politically suicidal Senate campaign with Senator Hillary Clinton. This campaign has the potential, by virtue of the probable historic magnitude of her loss, to destroy any future public/political ambitions she may otherwise have.

If the Republicans opt for someone in the mold of their recent Federal judicial appointments (i.e. ideological right-wing extremists), expect a Senate battle of that will drag on for an extended period and not conclude until that institution has suffered irreparable damage.

I nominate James Clifton. He is my nominee. About time we cleaned up everthing 'round here. No, in all seriousness, I dont have a clue right now.

I think that it's kind of pointless for somebody like me to comment on who Bush should nominate. I don't hae the slightest clue who the best candidates are but the White House has a whole staff busy on this.

But a couple of interesting possibilities that the San Jose Murky News says have been short-listed are two Ediths, Clement and Jones. Both are female, which would replace Sandra O'Connor. And both of them are currently on the 5'th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans, which would have symbolic value. Another possibility from the 5'th Circuit is Emilio Garza. Bush seems to have a soft spot for Hispanics. Another Hispanic that I wouldn't be surprised to see nominated is the familiar Alberto Gonzales, US Attorney General and Bush's personal friend.

    Alberto Gonzales AGAIN?

I'd LIKE to see him consider U.S. District Judge Martha Vasquez from New Mexico.

One nasty trend in both State and Federal Court systems is to install as appellate Judges lawyers with no trial level experience either as Judges or lawyers. I don't much care for the results...

    Young Nosborne,

I have a question. Is it normal to nominate a chief justice for the Supreme Court a nominee that has not even served on that level? I am just curious. I have never heard of such a thing. Please correct if I am wrong.

It was most unusual to nominate Associate Justice (Darth Vader) Rhenquist to be Chief Justice.

Five out of sixteen Chief Justices had previously been Associate Justice: John Rutledge, Edward Douglas White, Charles Evans Hughes, Harlan F. Stone, and William H. Rehnquist. Not exactly "most unusual."

Really? I had no idea, then. I remembered the commentary when Darth was elevated.

Anyway, the point is, going outside the Court is not only not unusual but is more common than promoting from within.

Of course, eleven of sixteen Chief Justices were never Associate Justice.

    They were bachelor justices, IIRC.

    :D

Actually, I did a stint in politics and wouldn't mind holding office again someday.

You'd get my nomination, "Dr." Osborne, but alas, I am not Bush 43.

    Robert Bork.

    Right a wrong. :D

Was there some reason why Bork's nomination was not confirmed ... other than that someone revealed that he smoked pot in the Sixties (and who the hell didn't)?

Well, I didn't, for one, then or ever! The smell of the stuff burning or fresh, made me want to throw up.
