So that I won't be guilty of cross-posting, I'll just refer the reader, as my response, to this post...

...which is probably the thread where this thread's starting post belonged in the first place.

The switcheroo is untoward and the unseemly haste shows disrespect to the late Chief Justice.

  4. Bush leadership in crisis - this time the Supreme Court

I agree. Just when Bush had it in his hands to actually nominate a decent and objective "normal justice" to the Supreme Court, he goes and does this and quickly shuffles his man into the Chief role, calling into question all motives and future behavior of the unfortunately placed new Chief Justice.

Bush strikes again - with another example of extremely poor judgment/leadership qualities....

This was a predictable move; it has been the President's intent all along to install Judge Roberts as Chief Justice.

I will not here repeat my sentiments regarding this appointment except to say that the President has shown himself willing to throw occasional bones to the Religious Right but he is NOT willing to trifle with the Supreme Court. He wanted a man who was, like himself, a child of privilege and fundamentally friendly to wealth and power. (The President is a fake Westerner, folks. Yale and Harvard and Kennebunkport? C'mon! He is a SOLID member of the Eastern Establishment! He's as "common" as Caspian caviar.)

But Judge Roberts is ALSO devoted to the rule of law. He will be a brilliant Chief Justice.

In any event, I am very pleased at the President's instant and unmistakeable refusal to placate his Religious Right supporters (not to mention Old Accountable, Mr. Tom Delay) by elevating Scalia even though as a practical matter such a move wouldn't mean very much to American jurisprudence.

Chief or associate; they each get ONE vote.

Fortunately, the above statement is subjective, an opinion not shared by all.

It's not his choice, nor the quality of the man selected..... As they used to say once upon a time in far better days of yore.....

    "It's the TIMING Stupid!!!"......

(hence, to beat a point into the ground, the poor leadership of Herr Kommander in Chief Bush.....)

"Timing" no es tan importante a nuestro Presidente como antes.

He's a lame duck, remember? All HE is worried about is preserving the position of his "base" (his term), the wealthy and powerful, for the foreseeable future. He feels, rightly, I think, that Chief Justice Roberts will serve to protect the interests of the Bush family and its friends well into the future.

I don't really mind, though. Roberts IS a wonderful pick; he really WILL be a great Chief Justice in a Court that, frankly, has been made up for the most part of hacks, ideologues, and mediocrities. (I hope.)

The rest has ALWAYS been a smoke screen. He has NEVER really been very concerned with "moral values" or "restoring religion to its rightful place in America". Don't you GET it? Karl Rove engineered the Unholy Alliance in part because the Religious Right could be purchased SOOOO cheaply!

And THAT, friends, is because us lefties forgot that to most Americans, decency is an OBJECTIVE standard!
