May she now have the peace, resolution, conclusion, and closure she so deserves.

... but she was already dead. That is the debate coloured by diatribe from right wing religious fundamentalists and their opposites.

Everyone has a point of veiw and everyone is entitled to their point of view. I just wonder what important information has been withheld from the public while this pointless argument has gone back and forth on the front pages, and at the head of the newscasts.

Now the pro-death party can begin! I'm sure Michael, his attorney, and the activist judges can really whoop it up now that their murder is complete and final. What a blast....

There was an interesting piece on NPR about the Pope's feeding tube.

Apparently, Rome had issued an official opinion that tube feeding WAS a form of medical life support and could therefore be discontinued if the patient so desired without the result being considered suicide.

However, the Pope recently made an off hand remark that there is a human duty to feed such patients until they die of some other cause.

Whatever wlse one may think of the Roman Church, they usually take well-thought-out and consistent positions but apparently in this matter, Rome is itself not speaking with a single voice.

It was a very interesting piece. The Bishop they interviewed was very clear though that the official opinion is still the OFFICIAL position. His comparision was to a judge who offered an opinion from the bench versed offering personal opinion at a news conference.

    I agree French,

Anything to cloud and confuse other issues, thus creating distraction, a wonderful right wing ploy. We would not want to talk about our huge deficits? No, we don't want to do that! This poor Schiavo lady is merely a ploy of political grandstanding, why didn't they try to save her 15 years ago? or 10 years ago? If Jeb Bush is so concerned with saving lives, maybe he should stick to helping his brother pull American troops out of Irag. Let's keep things in perspective here!

Some of you should be ashamed of your posts.
Does civil discourse need to be on life support?
You know who you are. And you know better.
And bitching at me doesn't change anything.
    Change yourselves.

Yea, Jesse Jackson, Unitarian ministers, Ethical Culture leaders, and Jewish rabbis who voiced support for reinserting the feeding tube are all right wingers!

First, thank you for being honest and noting those who wanted the feeding tube reinserted covered the left-right spectrum.

Second, I suspect as this country moves further and further to the left ethically and morally, many of us who at one time vehemently abhored the word fundamentalist will begin to appreciate the fundamentalists as in this particular case, we are fundamentalists as we believe in a person's fundamental right to life.

I do not currently see this country further and further to the "left" as you put it. Let's not get silly here. This country is as far right as your leader "baby bush" put it. Of course, he changes as easily as the wind, such as his guest worker program, who mainly help the corporate world, not the poor immigrants. How appropriate, especialy on Cesar Chavez day!

    respectfully,

Who brought up the original question? I guess it is ok to bring in Jesse Jackson when it suits you, but then you despised him when he was supporting John Kerry? Interesting opinion.

Let me further state, while all of our slants our interesting, they are all merely opinion, nothing more, nothing less, including my opinion. Thank god we live in America!

    Take care,

    Abner

P.S. I very wise man once told me, "I have never heard a wrong opinion"

Yea, Cesar Chavez! I supported him and his migrant grape workers until I saw the hypocrisy.

He stayed in expensive hotels while the laborers slept in the fields during the protests!

I guess you haven't read many of my posts. I think I am fair. I give credit where credit is due. If anyone on the left or right takes stands I think are right, I will give them their due.

Jackson supports many issues I hold dear to my heart. Unlike so many on here, I don't throw out the baby with the bath water.

    Thanks brother Clifton,

now you have shown your true colors, give me a break! My father knew Cesar Chavez, shame on you!, I wonder if you really are a man of the cloth, I doubt it. I thought a man of the cloth was supposed to be more inclusive and non judgemental! Of course, your opinion goes right along with your leaders opinion that corporations should have more rights than workers.

I heard the same piece and I also heard tonight on the way home from work that his feeding tube is a nasogastric tube and not a permanently inserted PEG. It caused me to wonder if the Catholic church might differentiate between the temporary NG tube and the PEG. Any thoughts?

The cable networks are all currently reporting that the Pope's condition has taken a serious turn for the worse and that he was administered the Last Rites a few hours ago.

Apparently he has developed a urinary tract infection and a very high fever. While the medical pundits are saying that this kind of infection usually responds well to antibiotics, they also say that given the Pope's age, other medical problems and general frailness, this series of medical setbacks may well represent his final crisis.

It looks like police are assembling at St. Peters (it's night there) in anticipation of large crowds gathering there tomorrow morning. Streets are being closed etc.

The President of Catholic University of America was talking to Wolf Blitzer on CNN, and that issue came up.

I'm certainly no expert on this and only know what I gathered from that interview. But apparently the RC Church's position is that if a person is already dying, then no heroic measures need to be taken to prolong that person's life. A decision to withhold medical measures isn't suicide (or murder!) since the death is due to the underlying medical condition and would have happened anyway. But if a person isn't terminal but nevertheless requires extraordinary medical measures in order to survive (kidney dialysis perhaps), then witholding those measures is against the teaching of the church.

Can we also have a right to death?

I know my family members, friends, and many in my 55+ active adult community believe in death with dignity.

California voters may get the chance to vote on a "death with dignity" initiative by Nov 2006.

Oregon has such a law which is headed to the Supreme Court.
