"...The account said that Mr. DeLay suffered multiple injuries, including kidney failure, and that his wife, Maxine, and their other children made the initial decision to withhold kidney dialysis and other treatments when it became clear that he could not recover. Representative DeLay, at the time in his third term in the House, did not object, the newspaper's report said."

    ...

"However, Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council, said that Mr. DeLay did not act inconsistently, and that the congressman's father could not be compared to Ms. Schiavo, who was receiving no medical treatment other than nutrition and hydration through a feeding tube.

"Two different situations," Mr. Perkins said. "With Terri Schiavo, there was no plug pulled, there was no respirator taken away from her. She was simply by court order deprived of food and water."

It is indeed interesting that these are two different situations. Although this article has little detail, after searching for another source it appears that Rep. DeLay's father was in a coma, kept alive by intravenous lines and oxygen equipment.

So while it may have been possible for his father to come out of a coma, receive transplanted kidneys and eventually get some of his mental and physical abilities back their family decided that his father didn't want to live like that and pulled the plug.

On the other hand, it appears that court-appointed specialists who examined Terri feel that her higher brain functions are gone - she cannot heal or re-grow cerebral tissue that has been replaced by spinal fluid, nor can this tissue be transplanted. So although there is no chance of Terri regaining her mental faculties Rep. DeLay believes that removing her feeding tube is "an act of barbarism".

    Different indeed.

Definitely. What a story. It just shows how hypocrisy is confortably installed in all levels of society. I am sure, if the wind would blow in another direction, this very guy would say the best thing to do is to pull the plug. And he would swear the opposite ten minutes after that without blushing, if circumstances had changed. Without blinking his eyes. On his mother´s grave. :p

OK. You guys want to talk hypocrisy? Let's talk about Teddy Kennedy, who, in arguing against privatizing just a tiny part of Social Security referred to the stock market as "a giant casino." Do you know how the Kennedys amazed their billions? Of course, that's AFTER they acquired the seed money through bootlegging.

    PLEASE, Jugador! "Rumrunning", not "bootlegging".

    There's a difference.

Rumrunning takes place at sea and is MUCH more romantic. ANY two-bit hood could bootleg but it takes a GENTLEMAN to run rum!

Tom Delay will likely be indicted one of these days...I wonder if they'll change the rules (again) to allow him to serve as Speaker from the inside of Texas prison...after he's convicted, of course.

Wait, I fail to see where the hypocrisy lies. I've made a little bit of money in the stock market, study it fairly closely... it usually has better odds than roulette but I totally agree that it's basically a giant casino. If an investment isn't FDIC-insured, there's always some chance of losing your shirt.

  7. ...or in Kennedy's case, your pants.

    He he!

Good one Nosborne! If there is any justice in this world, Tom Delay will be indicted, scumbag that he is. I hope the right wingers rally around him, it will only sully them even more, Bush's approval rating is already at 45% The moral angle just doesn't cut it anymore! You have to practice what you preach, Amen brother!

    Take care, Abner
