Left-winged goofball and outright nut Al Franken is thinking of challenging Republican Senator Norm Coleman of Minnisota in the 2008 election!

Senator Coleman has been an excellent Senator and is a rising star in the GOP. He's intelligent, articulate, and fairly moderate in the traditions of former senators Durenberger and Boschwitz.

Coleman would beat him worse than Obama beat Keyes in Illinois!
Franken's left-wing talk show is a huge flop!

Personally, I hope he does challenge Coleman. We will need a jester in the political arena by then. :D

Senator Coleman the "rising star" in the GOP job approval ratings continue to drop in Minnesota, down to 47% as of Jan. His biggest decline came among 25-34 year olds, down 19 points.

You have to remember, this is the same guy who was defeated by former professional wrestler Jesse "The Body" Ventura in the 1998 MN Gubernatorial election.

Al Franken defeating Coleman isn't as far fetched as it may seem. MN is a traditionally liberal state, and once a celebrity enters the race anything can and will happen.

I agree. A Franken win isn't that far fetched, as MN is a VERY liberal place. So maybe it would be even more funny if Franken won? Well at least not to Jimmy, unless of course Franken were to suddenly become a far right neo conservative Bush lover.

Also, speaking of Ventura, I read that he was thinking about running for the presidency in 2008 as an independent, or with a 3rd party. That would be very detrimental to the Democrats.

It is very unlikely that Ventura will run for president. However, there have been some rumors that he may jump in the US Senate race in 2006. He has said in the past he won't run for office again, but you can never rule anything out with Ventura.

I just keep having this mental image of "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me" campaign signs.

I know MN must have been extremely liberal in the past. Weren't they the only state not to go for Reagan in the 1984 525-13 landslide?

But isn't that starting to change a bit? Bush actually managed to get about 48% of the MN vote. Given that, could an extreme lefty like Franken actually win?

I woudn't be surprised to see Al Franken at least be a serious contender - Christ - we have the Terminator as governor here so I guess anything is possible.

Too bad O'Reilly's not running on the other side. I've seen Franken serve O'Reilly his own butt on a plate before, and I can't imagine too many things funnier than that was.

I have a personal beef in this, lived in MN 10 yrs. Gotta say that MN is probably more conservative than it's been in decades, almost went Bush in last election.

    Franken would get destroyed.

Jessie was different, Hollywood, yes, but also Minnesotan to the last measure, lives in Minnesota, was mayor of a NW TC suburb long before he ran for Gov, even has the accent down pat. His roots are unquestioned.

But Franken? Is he even from MN? I've certainly never seen him around, never even heard of a MN appearance of his, never heard of him having MN roots or citizenship. Not like Louie Anderson or Bobbie Zimmerman, everyone knows they're from MN; even Jessica Lange, who's hardly a Minnesotan in any meaningful sense, is well-known to have (had?) a mansion in Stillwater near the St. Criox river.

What in the world is Franken's connection?

I listen to him on the lib network (just for keeping up with him). The guy is terrible, by the way. Politics aside, listening to him is like watching paint dry. Anyhow, he really is playing up his youth in Minnesota. My guess is he'll run right about the time Air America folds. BTW, FOX News has some horrendous video of him going absolutely bizerk, screaming obscenities and generally suggesting by his actions that he has a screw loose. You can bet they'll pull those clips out with relish if he declares.

Franken grew up in St. Louis Park, MN, and graduated from Blake High School. Most people that grew up in this area know about him being from here.

I know he is based in NY currently, but I'm not sure if he still holds a residence in MN or not. At any rate if he decides to run he said he plans to move back to MN on a permanent basis at least 2 years before the election.

His radio show is actually doing better than expected.

FOXNews made a fool of themselves back in 2003 when their law suit against Franken got laughed out of court. His book got tons of free media attention and ended up being a best seller. I would think they learned their lesson the first time around.

Gimee a break. Franken's entire audience on his best day ever is just a rounding error for either O'Reilly or Rush Limbaugh. If you think Air America will be around (without Soros's money, at least) in 2008, then I have some mountain property just outside Miami to sell you.
