This is certainly more than I knew about him.

    Schmeling.

Schmeling (56-10-4) was a nice guy and a good boxer. Germany just can't seem to produce heavyweight champions anymore, however.

Probably the best heavyweight fighter they have produced since Schmeling was Karl Mildenberger (56-6-3), who give Muhammad Ali (56-5) a very good fight in 1966.

Mildenberger held his own for 12 (scheduled for 15) rounds before being knocked out. He also held the distinction of being the first southpaw to fight for the heavyweight title.

This was the only time in the illustrious career of Ali that I was for the opponent.

No offense, Jimmy, but what of the rest of the story? If that short story sums up Schmeling then he was one heroic sob.

No offense taken. I can't pass up an opportunity to talk about boxing, ha!

From all accounts, the story you reference is a true and accurate portrayal of Schmeling.

I had read similar accounts for years. It's not uncommon for nations to use sports figures, especially those engaged in international competition (remember Jesse Owens), as symbols of the national politik.

Most don't care about politics, they just want to engage in their chosen field of sports.

  5. I had always been given the impression, through reading and study, that Schmelling was somehow a Hitlerite stooge. It is SO refreshing to learn that he was actually his "own man", and that our own Joe Louis was as much a pawn in the game of global politics in the 30s as Schmelling. The fact that both men became friends later in life kind of says it all.....

What a guy.... May God rest his soul...

    Interesting article on Jake LaMotta.

Yeah. I've been disappointed that this hasn't received more coverage. Sounds that, like Schindler, he used his status to create an island of good in a sea of bad.

    Re: Jake LaMotta

Probably a tad lower on the character scale than was Schmeling. :)

Yes, I'm sure. Boxing doesn't consist of the most exemplary characters, does it? There have been exceptions. Floyd Patterson was one of the most decent guys in boxing.
