Once an obstructionist, always an obstructionist! Byrd is a disgrace to all humanity! I bet he still has his hood and sheet tucked away in his closet. Probably has a black housekeeper too.

    I guess it's okay, since he's a Democrat....

He vowed never to fight, "with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."

    -- Democrat Senator Robert Byrd

Where's the outrage? Where's Jesse Jackson? Al Sharpton? The Black Caucus?

  4. Though Byrd's prior (and perhaps current) actions and beliefs are reprehensible, the article certainly does not present the REASONS why Robert Byrd is opposing Condoleeza Rice. It may not be because she is African-American - after all, that bridge has already been crossed with Colin Powell. Do you have any evidence that Byrd opposed the appointment of Powell too?

For all I know (and for all YOU know, BLD), Byrd is opposing Rice because of her political positions, her well-known tendency for subterfuge as one of Bush's closest confidants, and her poor advice she handed Bush in her current role as his National Security Advisor.

Sometimes we need to read between the lines, although I admit that the article with Byrd's head superimposed on a KKK figure is GREAT neo-con propaganda - but that's all it is. Kind of reminds me of the St. Regis floating heads at this point....

Re: Re: KKK Robert Byrd Back to Suppressing Blacks

No propadanda, Carl. Byrd was a genuine, bonafide KKK member!

And if you would read between the lines of his Senate speeches, votes, etc., you would see he really hasn't changed much at all!

Rice won confirmation without racist votes!

All who voted against her supported Kerry for President and said one reason they did was that she didn't tell the truth about WMD's.

So how could they support Kerry who said Saddam's WMD's shouldn't go "unfettered"?

Nearly every single one who voted against Rice believed INTERNATIONAL INTELLIGENCE that Saddam had WMD's.

Give Diane Fienstein credit for having the intestinal fortitude to break with her colleague, the hypocritical Barbara Boxer, advocating and voting for Rice.

Oh well, Rice is in, Bush is in! :D :D :D :D :D

    Carl,
I cannot claim to know every inclination of Byrd's heart. I do know of his past, and do know that he has been unrepentant of that past. If you have followed his record in the Senate and many of his statements from both the past and present, it is hard not to come to the conclusion that he is still a racist.

But let's turn the tables. Do you think any Republican in the Senate would survive if they had been KKK members (and recruiters) and that fact was exposed? Can't you see the hypocrisy of the left on this?

  7. BLD, yes of course I can. I'm no Byrd fan (except for the ones that used to play good tunes in the late 60s like "8 miles high" and "Mr. Tambourine Man" and the unforgettable "Christian Life" from "Sweetheart of the Rodeo"....)

    ;)

Michelle Malkin's columns are always filled with unbalanced invective. Here's a bit more context for his quote.

On March 4, Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) told Fox News Sunday host Tony Snow he believes race relations are "much, much better than they've ever been in my lifetime." Within seconds of saying this, however, Byrd proceeded to label lower-class Caucasians as "white niggers."

His comment was kind of confused but not necessarily racist. He may have been making the point that "poor white trash" are also labeled and insulted as much as many black people are. Last year he was noted for savagely attacking a prospective reality show based on the a "real life Beverly Hillbillies" idea as being demeaning to poor white rural people, so the issue is obviously pretty meaningful for him.

He repudiated the KKK a LONG time ago. One thing to remember about Robert Byrd is that he is very old. Back when he was in the KKK, it was basically a club for Southern businessmen. You had to join the Rotary and the KKK. I know this because my mother, who was born in West Virginia, told me that both her grandparents were in the KKK for this reason (I myself am not white and have never lived in WV, so it was extra shocking for me to come to know this).

Strom Thurmond had an even worse record when it comes to 40s and 50s. To hear some of his hate-filled comments during that time period, you can go to this link:

As a Republican, he came under a lot of attacks for this, but was essentially forgiven and overlooked by both parties because of his advanced age and the way he repudiated his racist history. I don't see much difference between the two senators.

I don't think Byrd's choice of words was very wise or his point well-stated, but unlike Trent Lott's comments, their meaning was not out-and-out racist.

That's a complete load of garbage. I actually was watching Tony Snow when Byrd made the comment. He said "There are white niggers and there are black niggers" and then went on to make a total horse's behind out of himself.

And to say that the KKK was a Southern Businessmen's club is an outrageous attempt to excuse this racist idiot. The KKK was, and always has been, a club for redneck racists who don't have an IQ above 23. Whether Republican or Democrat, anyone who ever took part in the KKK has no business making decisions for our country.

I would never excuse Strom Thurmond's behavior, but at least he had enough sense to apologize. The ByrdBoy never has.

I guess you can find all the details about exactly when and where he apologized for being in the Klan in his upcoming autobiography...

A lot of people accused Strom Thurmond for never apologizing either, but I believe he did.

And I'm not attempting to excuse Byrd's involvement in the KKK, just put it in perspective. It is very comforting to believe that only stupid, evil people were ever members of the KKK. But that's just not true. It used to be an insidious organization that reached way beyond committed racists. Today it is less powerful because it is NOT so insidious.

Oh, and I forgot, Zell Miller has an extremely similar background: racist Dixiecrat in the 50s and early 60s, apologized by the 70s. I don't know what party "Zig-Zag Zell" is in now, though.

I doubt 99% of blacks would agree with this absurdly ridiculous statement.

I say 99% because some blacks follow the Ezola Foster "John Birch line of thinking."

    BLD,

I dont think Strom Thurmond ever apologized. At least on the show Nightline, his daughter Essie Mae Washington never heard him say that he apologized to her or anyone else for the segregationist speeches he made. All of this is in her book, Dear Senator, about her life as his daughter. Again, I dont recall that he ever apologized for his statements. I believe she said that he just changed over time. His excuse was that is just the way it was in the South and "one" person couldnt change it. She asked him why couldnt he start? This was in reference to a question that she asked of him to why Thurmond would speak that way of African-Americans.I do stand corrected if I am wrong.

    Michael,
You might be correct. I cannot find a quote from Strom from a reliable source online. Some say that he did apologize and others insist he never did.

Unlike some I play no favorites with racists. A Republican racist is as bad as a Democratic racist. I grew up in the South and the Democratic party was the party of racist politics for many, many years.

Trent Lott is not one of my favorites. I look forward to his defeat. The problem is that Democrats, who have the racist history in American politics, get a pass by the left on racism these days.

For every Republican racist politician you can name, I can name at least five Democratic racist politicians.

The only thing Thurmond did, besides fathering an illegitmate black child, was engage in political expediency because he needed black votes to win reelection. He was a racist, tried and true, from birth to death.

I guess racist views don't get in the way of sex with the race a person claims is inferior, does it?

  20. Yeah that's true.... but they've all migrated over to your side (Republicans) now. Some things really never change.
