President Bush says that, after the elections, if the government of Iraq asks us to leave, we'll leave. Just like that.

I wonder. Oil interests and profit margins aside, can we really AFFORD an independant and potentially hostile Iraq given this assessment? Or will we be compelled to act like the British Empire and give "advice" that is meant to be taken?

There's no sign whatever that the civil war in Iraq is abating. Although all but four (or so) provinces will be able to participate in the election, those four provinces contain about half the population! What kind of democratic legitimacy will the new government have?

The terrorists are coming from all over the world. Iraq has replaced Afghanistan as a terrorist breeding ground. America was attacked by terrorists from and training in Afghanistan. Therefore, members of these groups have left Afghanistan and gone into Iraq.

 

1)Iraq didn't attack us
2) Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11
2) Iraq had no WMD

5) Other Muslims who otherwise wouldn't have given a crap are going in to help them. They are being trained. They are new recruits we are creating.
6) Al-Queda is still located all over the world and still plotting against us. This doesn't affect that at all. Except to strenthen their resolve.
7) This is very bad news for our troops. Not brilliant.

Plans to attack

I realize that most of you on this board have spent zero days in any military organization so maybe your ignorance can be excused, but here is a little tidbit of info you really should know. The military has lots of Colonels (you know, the guys who do the actual planning) that spend time in schools, staffs etc. wargaming missions that are appearing on the horizon. In 1994, before I left Europe, my last MAPEX gamed a possible intervention into Kosovo. When did we go? Not until 1998. So, WITHOUT A DOUBT, there were plans as early as the end of the first Gulf War into how to invade Iraq. That is what leaders do, plan ahead....

Four provinces contain HALF!?! Half the population? No. Les than 20%, And according to a poll in the Wash Post Friday, some 80% (according to Andrew Sullivan on MSNBC) of those in the Sunni triangle want to vote (even if they can't or don't).

And the fact that ex-Baathists and Sunni fanatics fear an election constitutes a "civil war?" Please explain that to me.

Can a "war" without fronts and still hidden away really qualify as a "civil war?"

Wednesday, six car bombing attempts failed, with none of the bombers able to reach their intended targets. One bomber was captured, the other five detonated where they were when they realized they could not get through the security. Some two dozen Iraqis were killed as a result. Even kidnapping has also lost its effectiveness as a terror weapon.

All of this only makes the Sunni Arab terrorists more unpopular. Are you - nosborne - willing to bet that the "status quo" threat you argue for will remain such though this years three successive elections?

Why can't Bush's critics simply admit reality: the war in Iraq was unfinished business. And because of the influence of the Oil for Food program, Saddam's scheming, and the UN's corruption, would not have been resolved without going to war anyway?
