Is anyone experiencing this (either online or at your residential programs)? I'm a liberal professor, and my liberal students terrify me by Edward Schlosser on June 3, 2015 I'm a professor at a midsize state school. I have been teaching college classes for nine years now. I have won (minor) teaching awards, studied pedagogy extensively, and almost always score highly on my student evaluations. I am not a world-class teacher by any means, but I am conscientious; I attempt to put teaching ahead of research, and I take a healthy emotional stake in the well-being and growth of my students. Things have changed since I started teaching. The vibe is different. I wish there were a less blunt way to put this, but my students sometimes scare me — particularly the liberal ones. This doesn't seem to a problem with querulous students so much as it does with spineless administrators.

"Emotional discomfort is [now] regarded as equivalent to material injury, and all injuries have to be remediated." I teach. I had a student complain I caused PTSD. In my environment, that four little letters send a chill all the way up to the top 'boss'. I am surprised I was not summarily shot; or at least restricted to my quarters for a month while only eating left over Pork Chow Mein MREs. The cause? I made this person sit too close to others, and on a chair too hard.
This isn't a problem with liberal students; this is a problem with overly sensitive students. I've had a mix of liberal and conservative students who were overly sensitive. As a matter of fact, criminal justice undergraduates, overall, lean conservative.
Over-sensitive students, weak educational administration, AND students simply gaming the system… :irked:
Over-sensitive students, helicopter parents, and now add to the mix that some states like Florida are considering allowing students to be armed in the classroom, many professors are becoming afraid.
Several states already allow students to carry concealed on campuses and haven't had any problems. Some other states let the university make that decision. The Texas legislator just passed a law allowing students with concealed handgun licenses (have to be 21 or older) to carry on campus, but private universities can still ban firearms. It's expected the governor will sign the bill. As a student and instructor, I'm not afraid. I'll have my gun with me, but not because I'm afraid of the students. I have night classes, and there have been several robberies and assaults on and near campus. When I attended a community college, I was so glad I was an online student. Several times a year, we would get emails about assaults, sexual assaults, and robberies occurring on campus, even in the daytime.
I have a 9mm, .40, and .380. If my students wanted to shoot me, they would have already done it. There's nothing preventing them from bringing guns on campus now. We don't have metal detectors, and I doubt someone planning to commit murder would care about a gun ban on campus.
This inability in so many people to understand the limits of the effectiveness of legislation always baffles me. How can liberals understand that drug laws don't stop people from using drugs, yet still believe that gun laws stop people from carrying guns? How can conservatives understand that gun laws don't stop people from carrying guns, yet still believe that drug laws stop people from using drugs?
