Best places to get started when you have no online teaching experience? For profits? Community colleges? Any helpful hints?

    What computer skills are essential?

What schools are likely to give an enthusiastic newbie a chance?

Any help will be vastly appreciated! Promise to pay it forward when my time comes.

Yes, for-profits like the University of Phoenix are good places to get your first teaching experience. The pay isn't going to allow you to retire rich, but it's something. Your local community colleges are anothert good source for getting adjuncting experience. When a school is looking for adjuncts, they're basically looking for a warm body to fill the position on a moments' notice. I once applied for an adjuncting position at Terra State Community College and got an interview but i was in hospital at the btime getting circumcised at age 39 pursuant to a yeast infection that i had been walking around with for about 7 to 10 years and by the time i got out of hospital the position was filled. What computer skills are needed? That depends on whether the position is online, paper and print dl, or in-person. If it is in person or paper and print dl, you might not need any computer skills. If it is online you might only need computer skills sufficient to surf the net, though if you want to, you could go a bit fancy and create a website where you have threaded discussions and such like, but there should be an educational media person who will help you with that.

Given the way many for-profit schools are shrinking, they may not be very good places to go to break in. One might even argue that this is not a very good era in general to try to break into teaching university courses online.

What gets me is this reply when Ted mentioned his previously dreadful physical affliction. Ted, I feel for you. How in the world could something like that go unnoticed for so long. Scary. Hope you are doing much better.

I assume novadar refers to this quote.

I must admit, when I originally read it my first thought was, "Ah... so this is the origination of the expression 'T.M.I.'"

Damn, a circumcision at 39? That must have hurt like hell.

How would that not also be the case for a newborn?

Yeah, tell me about it. To make matters worse I was eating a bagel when I read that quote.

    So, yeah.

I don't remember mine. I was but a wee baby boy.

Community Colleges...generally the time frame to get on aboard is fairly quick. Reach out now to department chairs to let them know you are available for the fall!

If you have not taken training and you are a beginner then it is better to register online and take training for the job you need. If you want to do software job then, it is better to take some software related course. Now, I am taking training from an organisation who is dealing with health and safety.
