California Intercontinental university Adjunct Pay Delay

Hello guys please advise me. I teach online for California Intercontinental university (Online University Degree Programs | Business/Information Technology Degrees | CalUniveristy) . My experience so far with the school is scary. They do not pay their adjuncts on time. This is the 3rd time that the faculty pay is delayed for almost 2 weeks. Another worrying issue is that they physically mail paper checks to their adjuncts. They do not pay us by direct deposit considering that their adjuncts are scattered all over. Please are there any legal action that I can take because of their continued delay on adjunct faculty pay? I have a feeling that they are now functioning like a Ponzi scheme when it comes to faculty pay. Even though I teach for this school, a lot of things about them is so fishy. Is it possible to report them anonymously to the department of education ? Please advice.

CIU is a DEAC accredited school and so if it's ponzi scheme it's a good enough one to fool the accreditors. At the same time, any organization that can not make payroll consistently is rather unhealthy. I'll leave to our many business persons here to comment further on that point. If these pay delays are occurring without believable explanation then I would be looking for a lawyer and updating my resume.

Thanks. I just emailed their accreditors, department of education and the better business bureau in California. I hope this will help.

    Reality Check

It won’t help. Moreover, I have to second Kizmet and advise you to update your resumé, because you are now officially on CalUniversity’s shit list. You whined about them on a public forum, associated them with a Ponzi scheme, then reported them to regulatory authorities. I doubt you’ll be welcome there in the future. Even if they don’t read DegreeInfo, they’re sure to do a search on your whining if they hear from anyone to whom you sent a report.

Now, welcome to reality. You work for a for-profit online university. (Keep in mind that to me, online university is an oxymoron, and most, though not all, for-profits are the spawn of satan.) And for-profit online universities are starting to drop like flies. You will not necessarily find any other similar school more to your liking. (I am also cognizant than you earned your own Ph.D. from a for-profit.)

A two-week delay in pay? Hell, even Goddard College, a reputable non-profit, has hung up its pay schedules more than once over the years.

And complaining that you’re not on direct deposit? If you only receive a few checks a year, it doesn’t pay them to put you on it, even though their full-time employees likely are on direct deposit. With your Ph.D. in Management, I shouldn’t have to tell you that they’re gaining interest by hanging up your (and everyone else’s) money for several extra days by using traditional paper checks.

My recommendation: move on, and stop whining. It’s not becoming, Dr. Jeff.

When translated from Levicoffian to American standard English, Steve's post reads "Welcome to DegreeInfo, fine sir! This may be an unwinnable situation, but I wish you all the best. Please feel free to ask us if you have any other questions. :)"

M.C. offers an accurate and delightful translation. Perhaps I should clarify that when I suggest that you move on, Jeff, I meant to move on from CalUniversity, not from DegreeInfo, at which I join M.C. in welcoming you.

Yes, true, but the Levicoffian version is much more entertaining!

I have to agree with Steve. I used to do some contract work with a DL school that delayed sending checks for weeks, but I always got paid. Of course, this was only supplemental income for me. You might be in a different position.

I agree that you've probably removed yourself from future consideration at that institution. It's also unclear what you mean by "on time". Contractors aren't employees, and the contract may specify a timeframe longer than would be expected by an employee, like net-30 or net-60. I'm also curious with whom you spoke at the institution to try to restore accord before you went ahead and pressed the big red button.
