    Howdy folks!

I'm hoping to pick your brains on a few things. Lord knows I've racked mine thinking about all of this.

In the next few days my community college will be posting a full-time history position. The current individual will be retiring at the end of the semester. I don't want to get my hopes up, by I feel like I have a good chance at getting the job because A) I'm an adjunct there, B) the other full-time individual is strongly encouraging me to apply and C) the current individual taught both history and political science, which I'm also qualified to do. Despite these good thoughts, I'm wondering if I should try to make myself look even better, and that's where I'm seeking your opinions.

When I finished my MA with WNMU, I knew I wanted to continue on to a PhD. At that point I had it narrowed down to two fields, Public Policy or American Studies. At this point, I'm leaning towards American Studies because I can essentially combine my passion for both history and political science. I will be applying to the College of William and Mary for admission in Fall 2013. In the mean time, however, I want to make myself more attractive for both the community college gig AND the PhD application.

I wanted to go ahead and do the Grad Certificate in American History with APU. Though my coursework with WNMU is essentially American History, the courses with APU focus on key points in our history, and I think that would be helpful to me in becoming even more familiar with the literature out there on those topics. So herein lies my question -

Would starting such a program now actually help myself look better for the community college job? I wanted to wait until June to start since school would be out, but knowing that this job will be posted soon, I thought that starting in May might be the better option. What are your thoughts?

As always, I appreciate your input. You all have pointed me in several good directions in the past, and I have no doubt you'll do the same now.
