Applying for Part Time Teaching if Already Employed Full Time?

    Hello folks,

New here, but been reading /following for some time. I have a tenure-track position at a state university but am not earning enough to meet my financial obligations (student loans and child support, mainly). I am considering trying to pick up a couple of extra classes online, if possible. I've taught a significant number of online and hybrid courses for various institutions and participated in a fair amount of professional development activities geared toward online teaching the learning.

My question is this: Will an institution be interested in hiring someone who is already employed full time? Do I note that I'm tenure track/non-adjunct on my vitae? I certainly do have time to take on additional courses, particularly during the late spring and summer months.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

    Yes, definitely.

I've had several teachers who were full-time faculty at other schools, and were adjuncting for some extra cash. Their adjunct profiles (those who had them) always mentioned that they were employed as full-time assistant or associate professors at (insert school here).

Being tenure-track would be very attractive to schools looking to hire adjuncts, IMO.

I work full time at a community college (not such thing as tenure track at my institution), and I also teach for several online institutions.

I would think you are more employable. Many of the online institutions seem to always be looking for "legitimacy," you would provide another notch in their belt. And, if your highest degree is from a brick and mortar, even better. I know when I was working in the academics department at one large for-profit a few years back, we were told not to hire any adjuncts with an online degree for a while so that we looked more reputable. Which is funny, since that for-profit was trying to emulate another for-profit that they would not hire from.

Yes, however, if you have research experience and have a doctorate in business, I would advice to go as a dissertation advisor. It pays more and also looks better in your resume when you apply for your tenure.

Check Walden and Northcentral for dissertation advising opportunities.

If you go the teaching route, I would advice you to make sure that your name is not in the school's catalog. This created me some trouble in the past as some Universities do not allow full time faculty to teach somewhere else.

Online universities rather hire full time faculty at state schools than people working as full time online adjuncts. This adds credibility to their school.

    A caution here...

Please look through your Faculty Handbook before you you pursue an online adjunct position. For instance, at my school, I must obtain the approval of the Dean before I pursue an online adjunct opportunity. We have faculty at my school adjuncting on the side, but they received the approval first.

Also, from one that is on the tenure track at a private school, be careful that your online adjunct work does not interfere with the obligations that are needed for tenure.

Finally, are you aware that as a teacher at a state university, you should be eligible for having your student loans forgiven (assuming no private loans) in 10 years, and payments made under a "reduced payment plan" count towards the 10 years of payments?

I agree, it won't be a problem. Your FT job may have an issue with it so I'd check.

Wow... did not know about that forgiveness program... Now it is going to suck even more when I don't get a job after graduation - when I know that if I could find one at a public my loans would be seriously reduced. Thanks for the links!

If you teach at a private non-profit like I do, that service also counts...

As long as you work for a "non-profit organization under section 501(c)(3)" as your full time job then it does not matter if you pick up part time work as an adjunct.
