DETC vs. RA...did I mess up?

I am active duty military and am pursuing an MBA with Columbia Southern. My goal is to obtain this degree and then begin the quest for online adjunct positions. My question is, and any advice will be greatly appreciated--will the fact that CSU is DETC accredited and not RA hurt me? My military career has me all over the world...and finding the right RA program was difficult...or did I take the easy route that will hurt me in the end?

    Thanks!

Sorry to tell you, your adjunct options with a DETC degree would be very limited, if there are any at all. I have read others say that even DETC schools prefer RA degrees for their instructors, and that an MBA, even if RA, is often not good enough to adjunct.

Is your bachelor's RA, and how deep are you into your DETC degree?

Oh, and what is all of that about Cleveland State University? It looks like spam to me.

    Maniac Craniac,
Thanks for the reply--and I must have been spammed...sorry about that, first go at this forum. My B.A. is RA and I am 21 credits into a 37 credit hour MBA program. It is not too late for me to look into other schools, and luckly--I have spent zero of my own funds (military is paying), my only cost has been 9 months of my time.

First you haven’t “messed-up” if you complete your MBA at Columbia Southern. You will have an accredited graduate degree albeit it will be NA with its NA degree limitations. Nonetheless, as regards moonlighting as an adjunct will be another story, short of say the possibility with another NA university. Of course even a RA MBA won’t guarantee an adjunct position either; far from it. And if you were to transfer to a RA program like say AMU (e.g., RA and NA) as mentioned by Randell, you’ll be limited, as with any graduate program, in allowable transfer credits. Moreover, I’d hope that you’re pursuing a MBA, be it RA or NA, for more reason than the prospect to some-day adjunct. If adjunct teaching is your goal as regards the MBA, you’ve certainly chosen a very crowded (low pay) market as a new entrant.

I would second that - AMU will be your best bet since they are both DETC and RA and will probably offer you the best transfer package with what you have already completed.

American Public University/American Military University accepts up to 15 credits in transfer and they tend to view NA credits favorably since they are dually accredited by DETC and a regional accreditor.

Switching to them might be a good start towards working on becoming an adjunt, but I emphasize that it is a start. You might need further degrees or certificates (say, in accounting or finance) even beyond that. I'm not at all trying to discourage you, only to make sure you are prepared for the road ahead.

If you need more information, I suggest to post another thread. Everything I've told you are things I have read from other posts here, so there are a lot of people who would know a lot better than I would. :dunce:

With an MBA, MS in economics, and a PhD in Operations Management, I can't seem to find an online adjunct position either.

In a recent job announcement for a graduate-level online teaching course, the dean said that there were over 400 doctoral applications for one online teaching position. Competition for undergraduate positions is significantly greater. Additionally, the economy is getting worse and the job market continues to decline, which increases competition for online positions. At least there isn't civil unrest and starvation in the United States -- yet?

You are not missing much. I had to give up two of my online teaching jobs as requirements are getting ridiculous. I have been teaching for the same schools for the last 10 years and salaries have been about the same but requirements have increased about 50%.

I'm working on an public accounting license instead, the online adjunct business is not longer worth it in my opinion.

The problem is that everyone that I know that is doing an online MBA is with the intention of becoming an adjunct. I would think that an RA MBA would be the minimum requirement, a DETC MBA has almost no chance unless you are business star or CEO of a large corporation.

However, some board members still keep saying that online schools do not graduate too many doctors in business. At the online schools that I teach, about 90% of the faculty have degrees from Capella, NCU, etc. This is just going to get more difficult with the time as those doctors keep coming out like pop corn.
