Question about community college jobs for a second. I am teaching online for 8 schools. I have more than enough work, but a community college near me is hiring and I'm thinking about it. The obvious benefit would be medical benefits and summers off. My question is, how much time is really need to teach at a cc. They require a 15 unit load and 5 hours of office hours. On top of that what could I expect?
Every school is different. My school has the same hours you have listed, but also require an additional 15 hours "on campus." So you put in a total of 35 per week on campus (at least on paper - i don't know many who actually stay that long). Also, we aren't supposed to use school time or equipment to do outside work, so online classes are off limits during that 35 hours. Again, that is theoretical, as several people I know will grade online classes or check Discussion Boards, etc. during their 35 hours, once they finish their on campus work. It beats just sitting there..
That's what I figured. The schools contract only has 5 hours on top of the courses. However, there are also committee meetings and what not. What is your opinion, would you stay online only, or teach in person at the CC with online on the side. The benefits and vacation, along with increased salary over the years tempts me.
I would look for an online only full time position. My goal (just me personally) is not to "go to work" if I ever leave my corporate position. There is a position at the local college (4 year state school) that has a marketing instructor position listed. I thought about it for 2 minutes and said - NO WAY.
There is an opportunity for advancement (not just salary) in a CC, you might want to consider your long term goals. Good luck!!
I would absolutely pursue this opportunity. The only possible alternative would be a full-time online teaching position, but these aren't that common. FT > Adjunct
