    Hi all,

I would like to install and use Moodle to teach a course I have developed. I found the all-in-one install package for Windows and it looks pretty straightforward. My question is: do I need to buy a separate domain or will everything run from my local PC as "localhost"?

Has anyone actually done the complete Windows install? Can you share any details of your experience in doing so?

    Thanks!
    Jon

If you are going to have users, find a host that supports php or has a pre-built moodle install and run it there. you odn't want it running off your computer

I have done this for my students (at most 170/term) and the cost was at most $70 per year with domain name etc.

Nexx.ca was too slow but $10/year

Do a google on moodle hosting

    Good luck

Jon, I say this with love: if you're even asking that question, you shouldn't do this yourself. Use a hosting service.

I think there are free options for Moodle out there, but it's been a while since I looked so I'm not sure. I do know that while It's not Moodle, a free option is Schoology.

    Good luck,

Thanks Steve. Good advice. I found a service called Gnomio. They are a free Moodle hosting site. Any opinions on Gnomio?

I want to use Moodle as one of the most popular platforms for online teaching.

    Thanks.

jcummings, any host which offers Fantastico (which auto-installs popular web applications like Moodle) would work for you. If you're willing to pay $5/month (+ yearly cost of a domain name) there are plenty of good quality hosts you can use. I've heard good things about A Small Orange and HostNine but have never used either personally. I use Liquid Web as my host right now but they are more known for dedicated servers so their web hosting prices are a bit high.

In terms of free options, there's a recent thread on Moodle's forum here that lists some other options:
Using Moodle: FREE HOSTING TO MY MOODLE

You might want to post there to ask about Gnomio or whichever free option you choose if you decide to go that route.

I use Total Choice Hostin - Web Hosting - TotalChoice Hosting - for my website. It has Fantastico, which I used at one point to install Moodle. I don't use Moodle any more, though, but it worked really well when I did use it. I've had my site with them for about 7 years now.

I like the price, but I've never used them, so I don't have an opinion.

I understand -- I prefer it to all the others anyway.

It's also not Moodle, but Canvas LMS was just open sourced today. There's a free option for teachers, and I just checked it out and found it really easy to use, so I thought I'd mention it.

GoDaddy hosting has built in support for Moodle, they even install it for you through their support portal and configure the MySQL database and email integration, best deal going it is all automated... for like $5 bucks a month or something..
