I begin my PhD on September 1 and I was curious as to what direction to go. I wanted it to be in business with an emphasis in marketing but then I noticed a large number of statistics and math opening and was wondering if Financial management would be better or if I was able to get the appropriate number of credit hours to teach the course with the marketing emphasis? I am planning on attending North Central. Thanks in advance for your input....

    Sincerely,
    Shane

A PhD is a huge journey, I would not recommend you pick your concentration (an the topic you will be married to for a while) based on what the market is asking for. I recommend you pick based on your own interests. Also, I don't think you would be successful getting a PhD in a subject and not having any real experience to back it up if you want to teach.

    What do you like?
What do you have experience in?

That is the place to start.

Another issue: what are your goals?

I have experience in business. I want to teach business courses but I felt that there was also a need for math adjuncts so if I could cover those also I could stay employed enough. I do not enjoy math but I can teach it... I LOVE business though...

This advice is coming from someone with no degree, so take it as you please. I listen to people on this board every day who are working on a PhD in an area they love and it's kicking their butts. I would have to think if you're doing something you don't love it will be twice as hard because the drive and passion is not there. If you love business then do business, you will find work. If you like basket weaving, then research basket weaving.

If you are going for a PhD, you better have a passion for yor subject. All of my papers, along with the comp exams and the beast called the dissertation, revolve around your research topic. I can't imagine writing a dissertation and the sacrifices I made for it if I weren't passionate towards the subject.

I would like to just get a PhD in business with no concentration but it does not look like this is offered @ North Central... I have a Masters of Management but I wanted to concentrate on Marketing... I know quite a bit about management would that make it any easier? My enrollment counselor suggested I stay in Management but I also know marketing and it appears there are more openings in that specialization...I know it will be daunting no matter what specialization I choose..

Isn't a concentration optional at NCU? I would think you could take a mix-match of classes to earn the credits. That is the way it used to be. Have you asked and explained that you do not care about a concentartion?

I want to teach as an adjunct "full time" between local community colleges and 2-3 online schools.
