Just need to vent. I got a teaching job. Did the interview and everything was great. We did a hand shake on the deal, and I was told to call back on the 4th to get some information sent to me and stuff. So I call back when I am told ... and they say. Sorry Joey someone else just called and he has more experience . So just wait and I will call you next week to let you know. Well next week is over and they did not even call to tell me. I am mad and hurt..

You and Conan O'Brian have the same issue. ;)

I had a similar situation happen to me 3 1/2 years ago. I applied for an online adjunct job, was told to fill out the new employee documentation, and attend the new adjunct training session. The training session was conducted online for most of a weekend day. After that I never heard back from the school. And, to add insult to injury, I was not compensated for my training time. I didn't expect compensation for my training time, but I did to expect to start picking up classes soon after training had ended.

It took me a while to get my foot in the adjunct door. I had the same experience with a school - I had an interview, a job offer, I sent them a ton of additional documentation, attended training, and even got a faculty email address. This was at the end of the year and I never did hear from them again after the new year despite repeated attmepts on my part fo follow-up.

These things happen - budget cuts, program cancellations, department heads get ahead of themselves and hire without funding being secured, an internal faculty member wants to teach some online classes, a better qualified candidate comes along, your references are not as helpful as you might think?, etc.

Consider it a blessing - a school that treats its adjuncts that way during the hiring process is going to treat you worse once you start working for them.

I had two full-time offers that were taken away at the last minute (one university instructor position and one CC tenure track). Well, technically, I had to decline both, because their HR won't help me with immigration (I was international student at the time). Still hurts after more than a year.

I lost my last job and in a shady manner, and this just throws me in to a little depression.

No need to feel bad about this. I had similar situations, I finished training and signed a contract with one schools that never called me after this. The name of the school was Cardean, they spent money for training and even a ticket for interview. When I tried to call my manager back, I was told that he was not longer working there.

I had similar situations with other schools. Adjunct positions have extremely low job security and schools are not so serious when hiring adjuncts as you can be fired at any time without any recourse (not really fired but never called back).

It is the worst cliche but it is most often true: something better will come up. Whenever I was turned away from a job I always ended up finding something better with a higher salary.

Next time though, be assertive and let them know that you want an answer. You can use the phrase: "I was contacted by other companies but would rather work here so please let me know as soon as possible."

ohh.. that was so discouraging.. They assured you of something which they eventually took it away from you on the last minute..

I had an experience where I was hired by a school, and then, the person that I replaced wanted her old job back. Yeah, it totally sucks, but there's not much you can do about it. There's really no job security untill you have tenure. The funny thing is that up until just before contract renewal time, they all thought I was wonderful. Then, all of a sudden, I couldn't do anything right.
